About this creation
History...

Ok I was looking at my Ratchet design and thinking of ways to retool it so that it might look:

a. a little more like a van and not a Cybertronian-van
b. a little less like Ratchet and more like a different character.

One thing that bugged me a little about the previous design was the shoulder placement. In order to position the arms behind the cab I had to have the shoulders at a slight angle. It wasn't a huge problem, but it did break up the smooth lines a little bit, so one of the initial changes was the leg and shoulder design so the arms and legs meshed better.

But the new leg design presented a different design issue, the feet now were obviously just folded up at the back. After a little experimentation it occurred to me that the legs could actually be formed in a concertina fashion with 3 hinges instead of two to form each leg, the lower leg actually folding in half with the knee and foot forming the very rear of the truck mode.

Once I had my extended truck, it became obvious I was no longer looking at a Ratchet or Ironhide, this was clearly a much more bulky design. I did briefly consider making it Blukhead, but when I added the blue to the existing white Ultra Magnus just jumped out at me.

The head was the biggest engineering trick and even now I'm not sure I pulled it off as I wanted. The head is in three pieces each independently splitting with the two side sections rolling UP to form a roof scanner or weapons emplacement and the rest rotating DOWN like the previous Ratchet design, and tucking neatly underneath the arms.

The front grill was a last minute replacement. I had originally designed the figure without it, but I felt the vehicle form lacked something, and bulking out the crotch area to form a front bumper would have been an issue for leg articulation, plus I wanted something similar to the G1 UM chest area, though I had originally planned to introduce more red with it.

The very last changes (done late 01.04.14) were to bulk out the rocket emplacements to form UM style shoulder pylons in robot mode.

The net result is my most popular design EVER. Thanks guys, I'm really pleased you like it.

I'm going in a few different directions next, but again it depends on time:

1. more LeGobots - I still have ideas for Pathfinder, Crasher and Leader1 that I've been toying with but haven't finished.

2. finally completing the prototype of my ride suit idea (based on engineering for Tri-cy-kill)

3. "My Own" Arcee - Actually a very poor prototype is complete already but I hate it and will probably only share the design as a "what might have been" comparison with the actual design which, at this moment, is unfinished.

4. Operation: Steam Knights - Changeling "Pheonix" which has been in the works since last September.

This is a massive retooling of the previous Ratchet figure. The transformation is almost the same, but I flattened out the legs to create more space so that the arms could be made to fold in better to create a more aerodynamic shape.

There are some compromises I made for scale that in hindsight I wish I could change.

The figure needs more red. My original plan was to use the front grill as a chest plate in both red and blue, but it stuck out too far.

The head design does require some fiddling to fit the space, it isn't simply a case of folding up the sides, they need moving along the t-bar as well.

The hammer doesn't feel impressive enough to me. I will have a rethink regarding the length of the handle.

Most versions of UM have shoulder pylons, as well as, shoulder rockets. I have a plan on how to incorporate them, but it could mean changing the transformation in ways that would affect the overall look.

While, on the previous model, the foot design seemed stable, with the heavier shins I'm wondering if the new design could use a heal spur for support.

One thing that occurred to me looking at the vehicle from the front is that it looks vaguely like a garbage truck. Sigh, that was unintentional.

As always it would be great if you comment and rate, but no pressure. I will delete any spam and report abuse.

UPDATE 01-04-14

NEW VERSION 02/04/2014

CHANGES

Added heel spur for stability.
changed shoulder design for more "Ultra Magnus" elements.
Altered hammer shaft to give extra length.

Because I can't use ldd on my ipad mini I will probably not be adding updates today, but I would like, as soon as I get back to my laptop, to add a few more images of the updated version. Plus I'd like to show a few images of the transformation, for anyone sceptical that it transforms without cheating.

At the moment the only element of "parts forming" is the hammer, but the figure would work without this.

I was thinking of adding the extra images to a brand new moc, but that seemed a little silly in hindsight.

Quoting David Roberts I prefer the chunkier look of this vehicle, compared to the previous one and the six wheels give it a really rugged look. Thanks for sharing the LDD file. I couldn't really work out how the wheels went on, so it was great to be able to take the MOC to pieces. I was surprised that the tyres went on again so easily: so many obvious connections seem so hard to achieve in LDD. It's a shame that the wheels won't spin but I can't think of a bracket in LDD that would do the job and keep the good, compact looks of the model.
There are a couple of brackets I've used in the past for larger creations but nothing that fits this scale. A 1x1 plate probably wouldn't have the leverage to support a functioning wheel axle even if one existed. I realised this morning that I missed off some typical UM features that may be added in a v2 but generally I'm pleased with the results. And the extra chunkiness was deliberate, UM is a commander, so his alt mode needed to be more impressive.
