Darden returns!
About this creation
The bright sunlight cast upon the inn was in deep contrast to the cold, miserable snow that had been there but days before. How quickly the world can change, and how diverse these changes can be!

The change was welcomed by Darden. He had been in the inn for over a month; now that the harsh weather had abated, he could finally leave.

The Mythronian casually looked back at the inn. His pursuer ducked. Good, the outlaw hadn't been noticed.

Darden continued his journey. In the shadows, the dark figure followed.

_______________________________________________

Well, this was a "small" project that I started at the beginning of the month. Originally it was just intended to be the inn and a very small bit of landscaping, but it's been a while since I've done a build focused on landscaping, so I decided I'd take the opportunity to work on my skills with rockwork, foliage, and color.

The inn is, however, still probably the focal point of the moc. The hardest parts here were the angled beams and the roof; the latter is done with 4 panels interlocking with some plates. Fragile, but it looks good.

Here's a better shot of the panels and the spot of tan, which is my favorite part of the building in regards to texturing. I wanted to try making a building that wasn't very dilapidated, and I think it turned out pretty well.

The foliage is by far my best; it was tricky to make it so dense, but with a few interesting plant combinations it all worked out well. I like the transition between the white and yellow flowers.

Some rocks on this side...

And panel rockwork on this side. This might be some of my favorite rockwork I've done.

And the title shot again.

Thanks for viewing!

Quoting Mate P Is that what's next?
Yep. I've been working on the entire episode for 3 months now...although I've only spent about a month on the main scene. Nonetheless, it's certainly one of my best MOCs and rivals Trouble at the Inn in terms of quality.

Even with my limited knowledge on rockwork, I could see that the panel rockwork was the weakest part of the MOC. It looked so much better from far away, but then up closer it showed too many gaps and cracks. And Don't go saying that rocks have cracks. I know they have cracks. But this certain part just looks too much like paneling, and not enough like realistic rocks. Nice MOC though. Epic building, and nice scenery and water, with good coloring in the pictures all around.

Fantastic job! The build of the MOC is exceptional. The rock work is very good. The inn looks great. The path is cool. The stairs leading into the inn are very well built. Well done!
  April 27, 2014
Looking back, I think the panel rockwork would be the weakest in the build on its own. Integrated into the whole it shows that not all of the bank is built on grid lines, but up close the gaps detract from its appearance.

Quoting Alex Rode I'm thinking of doing some sort of house like this. Is it all right if I use the same color choices for the wall: white and light tan? Just so then I don't get stuff from guys about copying.
Yeah, that's fine. Someday I want to try making a high quality building that isn't this color...but most of my good building-related pieces are white...

A simply stunning and beautiful scene! The complicated rock shaping actually gives off a simple look which is hard to achieve, there isn't too much of anything - the thick foliage is just what you'd expect from an overgrown meadow, the house is simple but has amazing details - the panels, the smooth roof and the wall texturing (i see some pixelart there ;) this is just great, easily one of your best models yet!

Yeah, that's something that bothered me: the rocks on the other side. Usually bridges lead to a path, but this one leads to...a climbing wall. :P

Quoting ~ Brick Okay, to start I want to say excellent build! The inn is a bit smaller on the outside then the inside suggests, but that's understandable. The rock work is top notch as always, if anything the panels were square-ish. The landscape blends in beautifully as well, except for that aqua colored vine!? I'm not quite sure what you're goal with that was. But now for my nit-picks. The roof looks good in shape, but the studs are inconsistent. One section is all tiled, while the other is covered in studs completely. And speaking of the building, the wooden beams look pretty good. I'd say a tad awkward with some of the angles....but still believable. I think some straighter ones would have looked better. Finally, the location. From the visual this little inn was built on a miniature island. I could understand one side being open to the water, but it appears to be surrounding the whole thing. All in all though, another great MOC!
That "aqua" vine is green - I just double checked with Bricklink. Yeah, you're right about the roof. And the river curves. You see, you can tell that it's a river due to the bit of rock on the other side of the river :P

Quoting Halhi 141 Thanks, and I agree about the bridge and roof. The problem with the roof is that it had to be that way - most of the studs here are either the unavoidable ones on wedge plates or the ones from 4x6 tiles with some studs (since I didn've have enough tiles). I do like the windows though, but that's something to keep in mind. I think the arches restrict detail slightly - maybe it's time to return to the arch technique from my last build...
On the roof, I'd suggest mixing plates in with the tiles, so the contrast between the studded and tiled sections isn't so extreme. As for the windows, ah, and perhaps so. :P

Quoting Kai Bernstein Excellent work, man! Great designs everywhere. The rocks and path are fantastic, and the building is quite nice. I think the layout is what does it for most people (and me), though: the placement and elevation of the inn and foliage, the curving path and rocks...it has this classically picturesque feel that few of your mocs equal. That aside, there /are/ a few flaws. Firstly, the bridge. The design is way overused and so a little boring, but that isn't the real thing. It's the effect of the texturing tiles on the side, which I think really don't fit. All other shapes on it are sloped, smooth or round, and here are three random square shapes stuck in. The other main thing is the roof. Or rather the stud placement on the roof. Some areas are completely smooth while others are studded. You tried to fix the studded sections somewhat by adding tiles, but the effect is heavy dilapidation right next to near-complete "unblemishment". Next, the windows have no details around them. I find that windows work best when they jut out or in slightly, or have some sort of detailing around them. Otherwise they look a bit awkward and out of place. That one is not too big an issue though. Finally, the beams. I know what you were trying to do here, and you did do it better than most, but the angles and placement are still a little odd. A horizontal beam beneath the windows might be good, but diagonal on one side looks a little unrealistic. Now that I'm past all that, everything else looks great! Particularly the rocks - the sculpting is awesome and the gaps completely excusable, as rocks like that that are by bodies of water always have them. The foliage is pretty good as well - I see what you mean now by that new technique. :P Overall, a fantastic build with few flaws.

The colors work great together (as has been mentioned) and while the panel rockwork is, IMO, not your best, the non-panel stuff is top-notch. Great work on the ground layering/texturing, too. The building is awesome and the overall shaping of this MOC is smashing. Definitely, by a long shot, my favorite build from you. Keep up the fantastic work!

Quoting Fraser Robinson Beautiful build Halhi. The colours are very nice, the rockwork is some of your best yet and the bridge is also quite good. Besides the roof personally I don't especially like the angles of the brown tiles on the side of the building, it seems too cluttered to me. Other than that everything is simply incredible, great job!

Quoting Stephen Boe I have officially found my new favorite moc from you. Simply fantastic! The colors all work really well. The rockwork looks terrific, the architecture also looks awesome (wish I had more brown tiles) and the foliage is also well done. Stellar work!
Thanks Stephen, and I think this is one of my favorites too. Actually, I'd say my top three are my three most recent. Funny how that works...

Sweet! The only criticism I have for you is the part of the roof where the two different roofs meet. I think that transition could have worked out smoother. Otherwise, great job!
