I’ve been called by many names in my life.
For most of my life, I called myself Jethryn, Toa of Lightning. My old friends call me an exile, and outcast. Those who know little about me call me the Strike of Lightning, the Friend in the Shadow, the Flash in the Night.
But I care little for any of those names now. I have a new name, and a new destiny.
Jethryn, the Stormhawk.
If you’ve lived in this world for 80000 years like I have, you’re bound to come across references to the Stormblood Prophecy now and then. For the most part I paid it no heed. I had no need for such things.
That all changed recently. I was attacked by a creature seething energy, and was overpowered by it. It knocked me unconscious. When I awoke, I was laid on a cot in a laboratory of sorts, with all sorts of people around me. I knew not what they were doing, but my first assessment was that they were some enemy who wished to take control of my power, and I sure wasn’t going to let them do that.
Whether I left anyone in there alive or not is still in doubt.

I made myself familiar with the hiding places and secrets of this unknown world. There, I would stay hidden for hours, listening to hear any knowledge that might help me escape. It was in this manner that I learned of their hopes and fears – they believed I was the Stormhawk.

Their assumptions were based on this portion of the Stormhawk Prophecy --
He walks among us unseen, like one of us, but we do not know. But on the day he awakens, the world will blacken. And you shall recognize him as this: a warrior clad in black, with flashes of silver, unarmed but deadly, with a face unlike any other.
The more I thought about this, the more I realized how, with every change to my appearance, I was drawing myself closer to this… I was always clad in black, and powerful even without a weapon. But the accents of my armor, normally white, had been dirtied while on mission and dulled to silver. And I certainly had a “face unlike any other” – ever since the day that my mouth was injured, I have had to wear a conduit mask to breathe properly. And I later learned that during my attempt to escape, I had destroyed the base’s power supply, effectively “blackening the world”.
Now, if this had happened when I was younger, I would have been mad with the burden and power of this new destiny. But for some reason, I don’t feel that right now… instead it makes me feel… confident.

Watch out, world. The Stormhawk has awakened.

If you didn’t know already, this is the fourth version of my self-MOC, Jethryn. Or maybe not-so-fourth, since I did have to entirely redo him at least once. He might be V4.75 or V6.25, I don’t know.
Now, in the original plan of things I made last year, V4 would be a throwback version of Jethryn’s Toa form, coinciding with my retelling of Jethryn’s past. However, the full-scale MOC of that failed, and the story that coincided with it did not interest me very much. (If you were interested, you’ll find his long-withheld backstory and Toa Mokha form on his Custom BIONICLE Wiki page.)

Then in February of this year, I made an overhaul of Jethryn’s backstory. The forefront of this change was the concept of the “Stormhawk”, a prophesied entity that guards the Matoran Universe from extraterrestrial threats. This new character, who was actually a double nature of Jethryn without him knowing it, has become a main theme of my fanon. This led to a big alteration of Jethryn’s physical and mental characteristics to accommodate this new form – his MOC form is darker and grittier, with small bits of silver instead of white and a “hoodie” that covers his entire torso. In addition, his personality changed as well. The version of Jethryn as it appeared in V3 was rather weak and afraid of his past on the inside (especially later in the story), but in this version he’s more embittered by it than afraid of it.
Now, on to the MOC itself. I’ll have to go ahead and thank Zach for helping me in the build of this model.

Fully custom feet for the first time! I’ve used partially custom feet before, on Drakaal, but this is my first foot design that doesn’t involve any normal foot elements (Slizer feet are not directly connected to the socket so they don’t count.)

Lower legs. Jethryn’s one of my few MOCs that doesn’t use Hero Factory limbs in his lower legs. That said, I think what I’ve done here is about as good as most of my lower leg designs, and I might end up using balljoint bushing-based legs more in the future.

Upper legs, based upon Roborider elements on the inside of the legs. The original designs for this portion used Roborider heads, and then Metru shoulder armor, as hip armor, but the first design got scrapped earlier and the Metru design didn’t work with me. Desperate for something that worked, I found two old TECHNIC elements and plugged them into the legs. Not only did they work, but they also provided sheaths for the hidden knives that I had wanted Jethryn to have since V3.

Torso. My attempt at a hoodie-like design. Actually getting the cape to work well was a nightmare, and even then it doesn’t work the best, so I might end up changing the torso in the future to be closer to V3. The Exo-force arms somewhat holding the cape in were also suggested/inspired by Zach.

Head. With V3 I disliked the use of the Sidorak mask, and tried to make a custom mask for Jethryn in future updates. However, with this version I went mask to the Conduit mask idea, but based on a Metru chest instead of a Slizer foot. I also changed his eye color to dark blue, a more subtle color, as I didn’t want the eyes to be too visible (they’re supposed to be covered by a hood, after all.)

Upper arms. Quite bulky, and probably my best upper arms to date.

Lower arms. I honestly tried to make these custom, but I had already expended my good parts on the rest of him. In the end I just used the HF limbs/armor, with some additional armor added for good measure.

WEAPON TIME! This time around, his weapon of choice (though he’s skilled with many) is this double-edged staff weapon that so far has no name.

He also has two long, thin knives hidden in his upper legs, as mentioned above. They can be used not only as secondary weapons, but for field surgery as well.

Comparison shot with Inikabuild, Galek and Arphax.

I am Zonk Hero, come to destroy all of BIONI--

Don’t even try.

Well, that's it here. Don't forget to rate and comment, and have a nice day.

Quoting Ventum (Mittens) Overall, the moc needs improvement, but is better than I ended up anticipating from you.
This.

Okay, so you decided to post this. You know what... I sort of stand corrected. He actually does look decently finished. I'm surprised about that. However, better photography would be better. Some photos are shaky and could seriously use some light editing. ONTO THE MOC TORSO: Not a fan of all the cloaks and stuff. It looks simi-lazy and I would love to see some actual chest plating. Also not a fan of the Mata hand over the crotch, that looks weird and just slapped on. Also, the bits near the shoulders look alright, but need improvement. Also, it looks rather rectangle-ish, and lacks shaping. LEGS: From the front, they look okay. Not a fan of the exposed blue pins, I would think they would be better with some black ones. The sides of the legs look rather rectangle and boxy. The side of the lower legs look rushed and undone, side plating there would be nice. Also, the Visorahk feet look like they'd jut out when you bend the knee. FEET: Probably my favorite part. I actually rather enjoy the feet. The could use a bit more shaping and curves though. ARMS: Not a fan of the upper arms. They Look gap heavy and lazily thrown together. The bohrok eye also sort of makes them come off as weird. I would probably redo that entire section. Lower arms look weird with that armor facing outwards. I would try and make it go out to the side, and add armor on the inside to help the arms look "full" and "Whole". On the hands, I really wish you would not have the one silver finger on each. Those look terribly done and out of place, just make the hands completely black or something. HEAD: Never really been a fan of the head. The lack of eye color bothers me, as it makes seeing his eyes difficult. The blue pins on the Metru chest look awkward and would do better with black ones. Also, the Metru chest piece being there as a whole looks clunky and weird to me. The hood DOES however, make the head look somewhat good, as it covers up the Metru head decently well. ON THE WHOLE: Moc could use some revamping in areas, but gets the look across. The Moc could also stand for some color in areas to make the character less monochromatic and more unique. Overall, the moc needs improvement, but is better than I ended up anticipating from you. I hope you take what I said and apply the fixes, if not, that's fine. Also, I wish you luck with your other builds.

Great update to your self-moc. I like all the customness. One thing that I think would improve the viewing process of this moc is improving photo quality. It is, of course, what our impressions of the moc are built upon. Some photos are blurry or dark and can't be seen as well.

Quoting Kain . One: I'm not a overzealous fanboy, I treat every one the exact same. Two: I just like the moc not the best nor not the worst(that and I don't like to see a three to four paragraphs as a comment, just one will do).
Ah, okay. Your below comment sent me the wrong vibes.

Quoting Reaper . Ok, here goes: I'm relatively impressed with this, it's a solid MOC overall. I'm going to avoid a Ventum-style critique, but I'll point out the main things I like and don't like. Firstly, the overall bulk and shape of the MOC is excellent, and kept consistent everywhere but the lover arms, which let the build down a bit (they just don't seem quite finished). I'd like some shots without the cloak-y cape-y things, more to see that they aren't an exercise in laziness. Ultimately, the torso is pretty good, and I can't really fault the legs all that much. The upper arms aren't bad, I rather like them, but they look weird with the thin lower arms. I only have two major complaints, really, 1.) With all the 'exposed' blue pins, I feel like blue is part of his colour scheme, and if it is, then a few more blue highlights would make it look better. If the blue isn't part of the colour scheme, then I recommend purchasing some black pins. 2.) The head. I just personally don't like the head, but since that's part of the stylistic choice you're making with this, I can understand if you don't want to change it. I just think it looks weird. Overall, decent MOC, with, as everyone has, areas that can be improved upon.
Glad to see you like the MOC. I can see the issue with the lower arms being unfinished, I may redo them while adding a bit more color to them. I probably could have done that now that I think about it, but the cloak is a pain to put back on the MOC anyway. The mata blue is intended as an accent color, but I don't know how well it would work as with larger chunks of it in the build. As for the head, I am considering changing it to a way where it looks better but still goes with the newer style.
Quoting Halhi 141 A lot of people have been criticizing the photos, but they are better than normal. If you don't have a tripod, I found it's good to make a brick-built one - they're simple to make and can really help get clearer pictures (and photography becomes way easier). As to lighting, I use a bunch of photo editing most of the time until all the colors look right, but I also find it best to always take pictures during the daytime and use natural lighting. For the MOC, I don't really have anything to critique (partially because I didn't feel like looking at it all that closely) other than that the colors are a bit bland. Anyway, nice build! Definitely one of your best.
This is actually my first post in a while to use natural lighting (I usually take my photos at night when I'm kicked off the computer.) I should probably do it more often. The colors are intentional, but I hope to emphasize the silver a bit more next time while still staying away from the black-and-silver cliche.

Quoting Toa of Sushi Did you hear that? That was my jaw falling through the floor. I freaking LOVE those custom limbs, and that torso? No words can describe it, it's just THAT good and original. The new hood and "gas mask" actually kinda grew on me, so I think it's fine for now. And that little knife sheath is just...Omg, I'm totally gushing over this MOC. Fantastic job Stormy. My respect for you as a MOCcer just skyrocketed.
Glad to see you like it. The torso and mask change aren't too popular but I'm glad to see that you like them. Now, pardon me while I go find that jaw for you.
Quoting This looks really good! I do have to agree with Ventum about some points. Maybe you should try making the silver a more prominent if you want to add color. Aside from that, I think this is a great MOC!
Yeah, I've had some trouble making the silver more prominent (ironic considering my strictness about color schemes.) Glad you like!

Quoting Legomania @Stormjay Rider - Actually, I ment that I don't like the mask. Sorry, I should have made that a bit more clear.
Ah. I figured that out the second time I read the comment, but thanks for clarifying.
Quoting Puff the Magic Thunderbird Only a couple of complaints: 1. The Metru armor on his face... I preferred the Sidorak design. and 2. The cloak is a bit awkward. Other than that, phenomenal work, great improvement! I LOVE the knife sheaths!
Hm, looks like the classic mask needs to make a comeback next go round - and the torso is definitely getting changed. Thanks for commenting!
Quoting Indy * WOW. A huge improvement compared to your other MOCs. This looks way more polished and solid than your other stuff, very nicely done. There's a lot of things I COULD gripe about, but I'm just gonna say good job. ;)
I presume Ventum has covered all your points?
Quoting Kain. After reading the long comment below me, I truly do not see any problems with this moc. It is custom which I like to see and every one should know that the creater made the moc the way he wants it to be created(crap, run on). If you do not like the moc then shut your mouth and move on. The creater will add revamps to the moc if it needs it. 5/5 very good keep the good work going.

WHOA YOU DECIDED TO WRITE A BOOK TOO! Alright. My replies: LIGHTING: I really ought to fix some of my GIMPing habits. The shakiness is mainly done on the shots where the camera is not on the stack of books that serves as my tripod. TORSO: Definitely reduxing that at some point. I used the Mata hand because #1 I was out of the black Metru chests that usually serve as waist armor and #2 Zach said it looked awkward. The shaping issues might be a result of my trying to keep him sort of slender -- again, something to be fixed in a future torso redux. LEGS: The emptiness on the lower legs is, again, an attempted emulation of some technic-heavy leg sides, such as your recent Ventum V7. I do have some spare pieces that I can use to cover up some of the pins. The feet don't really jut out that much -- I would put a half-width beam in there but there isn't an axle in a size right enough for that I have. FEET: Glad they're semi-okay for you. They're my first fully custom feet, so I don't know the best techniques for those -- I'll do some more experimenting in future. ARMS: I might end up redoing the upper arms, but I sort of like where they are now. I'll see where I am when I do make the redux. As for the lower arms, I can try to make some changes, but there's not a lot of room on the HF arm to add more detail. The hands were another attempt at adding color to the MOC -- I can make the fingers all black, but I'll probably need to compensate somewhere else. HEAD: Darkness in eyes was intentional, but I can change it back -- I just don't think the bright green fits him anymore. That leaves orange and light blue open. I do not have enough black pins for that, and even if I did, the blue pins sort of set in the lightning element, so I don't really want to change them. Thanks for the huge comment (about time I got one of these back), and I appreciate the feedback, at least some of which will be implemented will be implemented in future.

What I was trying to say about the legs is that the lower legs look short and stumpy compared with the rest of him. Disproportionate.

Quoting Hazeroth Wow! I'm really excited about this moc! It is very awesome. I like the legs and how you made the hood. I like the torso, but it looks not necessarily too long, but imo too bland, I feel like it needs more to it, I know that it's a hoodie, but eh, it's just me, overally good work!
Thanks -- that's another reason for the change, to give it some more detail (although it already has a good amount of detail on the shoulders.)
Quoting Legomania Great work! The legs look super good (other than the silver on the lower ones, the shaping doesn't seem quite right there), and the upper arms are also really nice. With this MOC I think that having the legs and feet closer together would look better. The large gap just doesn't work well for me. Other than that, and his mask, this is really good! Oh, and I love the music choice. Fits really well with this guy.
Thanks for looking. The silver on the legs was an last-minute attempt to add more into the general color scheme, and that was really the only place on the legs that it looked good (aside from the "spurs" on the legs which don't help him from a front view.) I've had complaints about the leg-foot distance, but really any tighter amount of space between them would ruin the posability, which I've already had to cut back on for the sake of MOC quality. Nice to see someone likes the mask. And yes, that music really my perception of where he is now.

Quoting Evan Botkin Alright! This is really good but now it's time....for payback =P Time to remember all the criticisms you've given me >:D First off the Photography is kind of meh but I understand, mine is not the best either. The color scheme is nice and I like the custom feet. The hood still looks cool but I liked the bigger version that covered his shoulders better. The upper legs are nicely done but his lower legs look a little short. The sheathes for the knives are a cool addition, I wonder how many people have been infected because of their use as both weapons and scalpels? =P My only other complaint is the mask, it covers a LOT of his face which I guess is OK but I liked the old one better. It looks really good overall though.
Actually, the "bad quality" of the photos is probably a result of the GIMPing. I thought it looked cool, but I guess I should make it a bit more uniform. Hood issues are again a part of the new torso design which I will probably redux in future. Not sure what you mean about the lower legs, I'm pretty sure they're the same height as last time (or larger than an Inika lower leg at least.) Hm, I really don't know. And I can see where you're getting at with the mask, if a bunch of people hate it I'll go back to the old mask or make an entirely new one. Thanks for the feedback!
Quoting Xlam, Toa of Balance Great job SJ! Hey, guess what. I like the torso. That's what. Proportions are nice, weapons are cool. but i think you could add some accent to the eyes, neon Phantoka green may look nice. Thats my only complaint, head wasn't very noticeable. But Good work overall!
Thanks for the positive comment on the torso -- still doesn't change my intention to redo it. :P The eyes were lime green last time, but I decided to change it to the darker blue to go with his lightning theme, plus since he had the darker aspect in this version I felt that darker eyes would be more fitting to him. Thanks for looking at the MOC!

Quoting Axel Schouten What can i say? Its a good Moc, nice proportions, good designs and an overall nice shape. Even though i'm not a fan of the silver-black scheme in general, you pulled it off nicely, great work
TY, my goal was even though he was black and silver this go round, that he would clearly have a predominant color of black with bits of silver as accents. Nice to see someone picked it out.
Quoting Commander Spencer Heck yes. You've outdone yourself, Stormy.
TY.
Quoting Bumblebee 5253 I like it, but.... I think his torso is too long, and maybe a bit too bulgy. That's my really only problem with the MOC, but the pictures are really quite sad, no 0ff3ns3. Great job, I love the story!
Ah, more torso complaints! :P I tend to make my torsos larger than Inika torsos and not as bulky, since it seems a bit closer to human proportions. As for the bulginess -- it's probably due to the cape element, something to be altered in future. Thanks for commenting.
Quoting Callux Toa of Fire Cool! *Uses a Stormjay like voice* I have a list of things. 1. I like the Legs. 2. I like the Un cutsom arms and they really look good 3. I like the New head design! 4. I like the torso, but it looks too big for the est of him. *Stops acting like You) Nice moc overall! :-P
Oh, you. XD
