Junior LOTR R3: Prof. B. VS Mate P: Over the Bridge! Fly!
About this creation
Greetings gents!

Here's my third entry for the Junior LOTR LEGO Olympics

My worthy and talented opponent, Mate P

Our category:

The Bridge Of Khazad Dum
Build the scene where Gandalf Battles the Balrog

Well.... the Balrog does not appear in this MOC. I didn't have the right pieces, and I heard that I didn't have to show him.... so.... yeah. (For you judges: You may dock points for that if you're displeased.) I also edited two pictures (the main photo and one other one) for fun. But I only gave Gandalf's staff a little glow and put a title in the main photo.

I can't tell if I like this better than Mir Gruthil or not. I think this might have edged it out a tad, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I thought it would be appropriate to share the poem Gimli recited in Moria... since this is Moria.

The world was young, the mountains green,
No stain yet on the Moon was seen,
No words were laid on stream or stone
When Durin woke and walked alone.

He named the nameless hills and dells;
He drank from yet untasted wells;
He stooped and looked in Mirrormere,
And saw a crown of stars appear,
As gems upon a silver thread,
Above the shadow of his head.

The world was fair, the mountains tall,
In Elder Days before the fall
Of mighty kings in Nargothrond
And Gondolin, who now beyond
The Western Seas have passed away:
The world was fair in Durin's Day.

A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor,
And runes of power upon the door.
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone for ever fair and bright.

There hammer on the anvil smote,
There chisel clove, and graver wrote;
There forged was blade, and bound was hilt;
The delver mined, the mason built.
There beryl, pearl, and opal pale,
And metal wrought like fishes' mail,
Buckler and corslet, axe and sword,
And shining spears were laid in hoard.

Unwearied then were Durin's folk;
Beneath the mountains music woke:
The harpers harped, the minstrels sang,
And at the gates the trumpets rang.

The world is grey, the mountains old,
The forge's fire is ashen-cold;
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls;
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls;

The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dum.
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere;
There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

Well. You probably want to see the pictures. Heck, you probably didn't even read all that. So... I give you Khazad dum!

I don't know why the picture turned out this way. It is right side up, but the uploader made it sideways. Sorry 'bout that.

I absolutely love the pillars, even if they are a little small. But the bottom section really gives the scene a more Moriaish feel to it.

A few WIP shots.

Thanks for viewing! C&CC are welcome! And best of luck to my opponent!

Soli Deo Gloria!

Quoting Isaiah Marc Extremely cool, I feel like it was missing the Balrock though, were you considering putting one in? Also I couldn't help but notice the upside-down cheese slope brick :)
Yeah, I know. Two reasons for that: first I was too scared since I had had no experience building creatures (besides that one eagle, and that isn't the best); second I don't have the right pieces for such a feat. Hopefully I build one sometime in my life. Ah yes, the upside down cheese slope. :P Like that part. Thanks!

Quoting J D When red son said your build needed something more such as a tower or balrog, I was thinking.... Maybe he was going off how realistic it was to the movie, but he does not know that if you went off the book, maybe there weren't Orc towers or whatever!! I wouldn't get too down! This is only how you improve! BTW- I think I've commented on this 3 times, oops.
Yeah, I guess. I'm not down.... not anymore. :P Yep. Eh. So many people have commented on this so many times it doesn't really bother me anymore. :P
Quoting Sean-Thomas Mahoney You know who's harsh. ASAD! Me the main runner is not a twelve year old. And didn't vote for Mate because he's my friend. I barely know the guy. YOU PEOPLE ARE SO CRITICAL! Aggghaaaaa! Fantastic rocks by the way. I really don't know why I didn't vote for you.
Well maybe he thought you were. I'm not being critical. And no one else was either. Asad was just a little upset.

Quoting Evan Botkin This is great! What really stands out to me is that you managed to capture the feel of Moria with the combination of tiled and studs showing, it shows how it was once the greatest work of the Dwarves but over time it has decayed into ruin. Only thing I would suggest is a Balrog OR (since you don't have the parts) maybe just some fire or something on the edge to brighten up the otherwise monochrome build. Great work though, congrats for making it this far.
Thanks Evan! Yeah, I agree about the fire. I had thought of that, I just didn't do it. :P Haha. Yeah, it is sorta monochrome. :P
Quoting Ranger Elegost Hey, sorry for not making it Prof. B :( and I would just like to clarify what I said earlier about the rock work. Although it is fantastic, I had hoped to see some more colour variation instead of just dark grey, in my builds I've tried to incoperate black and grey together, that sort of thing, sorry if I didn't make sense before :( Anyway I'm really pleased you had entered this contest, it's been a pleasure seeing your brilliant creations :) oh one more thing are you entered in MEMO or the BrickBattle Games??
Aw, don't feel bad. Just life, I guess. :P Yeah, that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for clarifying that point! It's been a pleasure competing! Thanks! It's always fun to be in a LOTR contest, even if you don't win. :D Sadly, I'm not in the MEMO or BrickBattle Games. I'm taking a break from contests (as I usually do after finishing one). Lemme tell you, it certainly drains your pieces! :P

Quoting Red Son Can I tell you how much I hate being the deciding vote? Very stressful :P Anyways, your rock work is lovely (as always) and I love how you portrayed this scene. However, I think it needed something else included with it, like the Balrog, or the towers the orcs shoot from. I felt that your opponent showed enough to capture the general idea of the scene. He gets my vote. But great job for making it this far ;-)
Snap. Really hoped to make it... oh well. I think... I think I get what your saying. But Mate and I built two different scenes. And, in my scene, there are no "towers" (or the Balrog, for that matter). But he didn't build a Balrog or "towers" either. In fact, there are no towers in Khazad dum. But he did have orcs and some fire, which, I guess, gave him the advantage. I guess it doesn't matter now, though. Guess God just didn't want me to move on. And if that's the case, well... then that's that. Thanks for putting up a great contest judges!

Quoting Sean-Thomas Mahoney Great work. I like the rock-work but you really haven't shown us anything but rocks in your last two entries so Mate gets my vote.
Thank you for judging. I appreciate your input on my entry; however, I would like to respectfully ask for clarification. Both Mount Doom and Khazad dum are rock-based scenes, so I don't know what I could have done differently. I would appreciate any advice you could give me just in case I go on to R4.
Quoting Ranger Elegost Fantasic Work Prof. B, I've been impressed by every creation you've built so far and this would have to be one of your best :D Anyway you get my vote, just for a better excutuion of the build, although next time I would like to see your other techniques used instead of the build mainly consisting of rockwork :) So Good Luck Prof. B with the other judges :)
Thanks for the vote Elegost! As I told Sean, both categories take place in a rocky area and I don't know what I could have done differently. Any suggestions for later contests I might be in?

Quoting James Prins The only thing I might have added is one of the toes of Durin's Bane stepping onto the MOC behind Gandalf; that would give the Fellowship something to visually run away from.
Haha. That would definitely give the Fellowship something to run from. :P Thanks!
Quoting Grant Davis Actually, there were some orcs, just right before the Balrog came.. :D
Ah, but they all ran away. And this was after the Balrog came. :P
Quoting David . This might also be one of the best bridges I've seen built!
Wow! Thanks a lot David!
Quoting Halhi 141 Lemme guess...is 90% of your collection dark bley?
Whoa! A very small comment from Halhi! And not really related to the MOC! Did not expect THAT! :P Heheh. Well... not really. I've got more light grey, but I have barely any slopes. I've got a lot of brown too. But most of them aren't a whole lot of good pieces.
Quoting Alex Rode I'd say that there are too many studs on the ground and rocks and that the rocks are lacking some slopes. But that's my very picky side.
Thanks! In some ways I'd agree with you. I don't have a huge amount of grey tiles, so I had to do with what I had. But the slopes... There are a lot of slopes. But I didn't want to slope the rocks too much since it's a cliff. In the movie it's pretty much straight down, with just a tiny, tiny slope.
