The Lighting of Moria
Practice makes perfect!
About this creation
Hi everyone,

Well, I was experimenting with a new type of lighting the other day and I built this little Moria scene to try it out. I "slanted" the light to make it look like it was coming from a shaft by building a SNOTed roof, but leaving an angled gap in it which allowed the light to shine through it at an angle. I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Check out the pictures and let me know what you think.

The build without the roof.

The build with the roof.

And now darkened a titch. This was the only editing I did to the pics.

And finally, another small scene I threw together while practicing some techniques for future projects. In case you don't already know, that guy is my sig-fig. ;)

Thanks for viewing and have a great day!

~Mark

Well done, Mark! The slanted lighting really really gives the feel of Moria, and those statues pull it off even more so. For the second build, the foliage definitely isn't the greatest, but the stone wall is fantastic!

Great work! The lighting looks really good in Moria! That idea would work great for the shaft of light in Balin's tomb room! Awesome work on the techniques as well, the stone work is really good!

Quoting clayton Marchetti Excellent builds, I love the lighting effect. Especially the darker pic. The second building looks amazing. Your stone work is just brilliant. Awesome technique Mark!
Thank you, clayton! I'm very happy with the stonework too!
Quoting Kevin Moyer Nice work! That's fantastic! I like the little "extra scene" almost as much as the main build! The stonework looks awesome. So why is your sig-fig all black? I'm assuming you don't look like that. :P
Thanks, Kevin! Well, I didn't have the right colours to make a siggy that looked like me, so first I had a space-suit guy, but I wanted something more original. I'd never seen an all black sig-fig, so I tried it out and thought it looked great! So yeah, I don't look at all like him; I was just trying for originality. :)

Quoting Graeme Straughn Coooool!!! Love the SNOT!! I think a few bones or rubble on the floor or cracks in the wall... just SOMETHING... It looks to perfect. BUT that lighting is amazing!! AND the other build too! Stellar work man!
Quoting Benaiah Newhall WOW!! Great job! That lighting is just Amazing!! I love it!! The only thing that you could add, would be some bones or something like that. I love the other build too! Again, Great job!
Thanks guys. Yeah, if I were building it for something other than an experiment, it would look a lot different. But we can also pretend that it's right after Moria was built... ;) Thanks again!

Quoting Alex Rode Cool stuff! Two suggestions for the second MOC that you showed: 1. Make the path lower than the ground. 2. Add some reddish-brown for dirt underneath the foliage or maybe some green plates. Really great lighting on that first build!
Thanks for the tips, Alex!
Quoting Mariner 1000 Great job, Mark! The second one looks like The Prancing Pony.
Thanks! Yeah, it's loosely based on it. ;)
