Miller Park Version 7: Completely Enclosed More Detail
About this creation
Lego Miller Park Version 7
In late July 2007, I tripped and required knee surgery. I thought this would be a short delay for finishing touches and I would be done before returning to school, but this wasn’t the case. Building the model became a major challenge since I was wearing a leg immobilizer and had to keep my leg straight. Shortly after returning home I found MLCad on LDraw.org and decided to build the entire stadium with the program exactly as it was built to get an accurate parts count and building instructions. On July 31, 2007 I began carefully taking large parts of the stadium apart and began the large task. Since I had access to the foundation once again I took another opportunity to make more changes to increase the building’s strength and detail accuracy. The CAD drawing and model rebuilding were completed on October 27, 2007.
Using the MLCad brick count as a basis, the current model was found to have 30,754 bricks. This includes 5,124 for the blue roof itself, but doesn't include figurines or their accessories (Cameras, cups, etc.) For reference Lego Miller Park Version 3 had 16,136 bricks including figurines and their accessories. The roof alone comprised of 4,826 pieces from that total. While the overall model size hasn't changed much over time, the number of bricks has more than doubled by adding additional detail.
During construction of my CAD drawing and the consequent model rebuilding I made the following changes:
- Redesigned yellow sublevel exterior outfield walls to remove vertical wall joints
- Added Lego Fiber Optic “LED Board” on left outfield wall
- Redesigned interior outfield wall and bullpens for a much more realistic look
- Redesigned Suites and Press Box
- Redesigned Bernie’s Dugout Area
- Redesigned Terrace Level with stair cases as it has realistically creating concourse beneath
- Added two Concession Areas and Janitors Closets to Terrace Level
- Added massive & detailed HVAC room on Terrace Level
- Added HVAC ducts above the Terrace Level seating
- Added Mountain Dew Deck in right field
- Added "300 Club"
- Added fire alarms and emergency lighting throughout whole stadium
- Made two sets of exterior windows removable so the inside can be seen during displays
- Made new access panel and removable seating/floor sections to access four Mindstorms
Now that the building is almost exactly how I dreamed it would look and I have an accurate MLCAD plan, my brother and I created a display case to protect my investment and keep the dust out.
Past Display Information
As the model kept evolving, my parents and family members kept encouraging me to try to find someone interested in displaying it. A plan to get the model exhibited at Discovery World in downtown Milwaukee fell through in early 2007. The model was exhibited for the first time at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Society of Model Engineer’s “TrainTime” show on March 1st and 2nd 2008 in downtown Milwaukee Wisconsin.
Following the TrainTime 2008 display, the model was displayed at MSOE's Walter Schroeder Library for almost a year. This display was another great hit and was regularly visited by campus guests, students, and the public. A personal interview MSOE filmed can be seen on YouTube here!
In the middle of the library display, the model was temporarly moved to the Harley Davidson Club 105th Anniversary Celebration on August 28th at Miller Park as part of CLUB H.O.G. 25, a one day event. It was a great event to be part of and I had the opportunity to meet a lot of cool people. Lego also proved they make great electronics as I had minimal problems despite running the roof continuously!
The model left its first display at the MSOE library to be part of the "Lego Land - Model Railrad Show" at the Milwaukee County Domes from January 17, to March 22nd 2009. The show also featured a replica of Milwaukee's City Hall and a Lego town with trains but I was surprised to hear many people came just for the stadium! I spent several weekends at the event and enjoyed talking with kids and thier parents about engineering and the retractable roof!
Press Stories
This model was featured 3/20/08 and 3/24/08 in a FOX 6 News story. Please note that the brick count was incorrectly stated as 75,000. Local WISN 12 News also ran a story 3/30/08 and 3/31/08 which can be viewed on their website WISN.com
In addition, my model was featured on OnMilwaukee.com and the baseball website Home Run Derby. Just click the associated hyperlinks to read them. OnMilwaukee.com also did a recent story about a special Miller Park tour I took.

Club H.O.G. Harley Davidson 105th Anniversary (8/28/2008)

Main display with me in the foreground. A small crowd formed to watch one of the dozens of roof openings and closings. Despite constant use, no major problems occured with the roof or Lego electronics! Thank You to everyone who stopped by or helped make this a great event!

Back of Display. Everyone who came back here was throughly impressed by the detail on the interior of the park! Many people couldn't believe the roof moved, but were shown it could!

Real Stadium across the parking lot as seen from standing in front of my display. The famous Harley Davidson Motorcycle with 105 U.S. flags can partially be seen to the left in front of the white tent. In 5 years, I'm sure it will be back with 110 flags!

Impressive! First the obvious engineering of the opening roof... and then the details inside are fantastic! It looks just like a stadium. Interesting how the scale and level of detail changed from your early versions. |

Remember how you said character makes a ballpark "interesting", well, in an upcoming comic, character will play a huge part at Grocer Park. |

I am in the process of building a much smaller stadium, but to a bigger scale. It is called Kirk Kristiansen Memorial Stadium. Do you have any suggestions to make it better? Also, I can't wait for the new model! |

Excellent is the word.
My only Criticisim is the inside seating and field. The seating's a bit steep and out of scale. |

Thanks for commenting. Unfortunately I wasn't able to build the model exactly to scale so that's one of the things that ended up being off. Please check back in March for the latest version. |
