About this creation
Crimson Rosella vertical tafe off and landing observation platform.
I don't have a very detailed backstory or specific role for my Rosella,
it was just something I really wanted to build! Perhaps, being weaponless,
it could be a futuristic plaything of the rich and very rich alike?
I've tried to stay as faithful as I could to real thing, which,
in general shape, proportion and colour I managed; the only major
deviation being the blue vertical stabilises on the wings. Some of
the hinges stick out like a sore thumb, which I don't like, but it was
necessary in order to maintain a good range of movement and articulation.
After making the Magpie (thank you to everyone for your kind votes
and praise by the way), I wanted to make another bird with a few
improvements, such as landing gear that tucked away smoother and imitated
a real bird's better, a proper cockpit and better engines. I tried a few
configurations of the cockpit, originally putting it on the bird's back,
similar to the Magpie, but it looked quite exposed for the pilot so
I opted for the belly, as the birds are naturally a bit chubby there.
Also originally, I had a hollow section behind the wings so the engines would
have a void to tuck away into when folded. However, it barely gave
any improvemment in clearance so I filled it in. I meant to take photos
to show yous but I forgot :( And finally, I tried to really minimise the studs on
this one too. One thing that was easier with the Rosella were the legs;
because they waddle close to the ground there wasn't the balance issues
there were with the Magpie :)
Where I grew up in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, these Rosellas
were always a familiar sight, deftly flying through the gum trees with
great speed and elegance. Some video for ya:

I wanted to see if other birds would be attracted to it. Either they'd peck it to pieces (funny!) or try to mate with it (VERY funny!!) Rest assured, if there's any action, you guys are gonna see it!
After realising it's not going to acheive anything but melt there on the lawn, I transfered it to shade of a birdfeeder. Now we play the waiting game...

This was really just an excercise in egotism wasn't it? You really need to stop self pleasuring with all those pics (that sounds like it should be on another kind of site doesn't it?). tehe very cool. Does it make annoying high-pitched noises at 5 am in the morning? I would imagine it would fare as well as the real version in the event of a head on collision with a car (hey, it happens, Aussies will understand - those birds are kamakazee thrill-seekers!) |

I love the originality! This is probably the coolest idea for a VTOL aircraft I've EVER seen. The way the organic for of the bird naturally works with the aircraft parts of beautiful. Go figure lol. |

It's not fair that you get to have all the pretty, nice birds! Most of the birds where I live are ugly and like to sit right outside of my window and squawk at the top of their lungs in the early morning when I'm trying to sleep. |
