Thunder Wind
Multi-purpose spaceship
About this creation
When I posted the Hoovertron, it didn’t have a name, so I said that if anyone has any name ideas, they are free to tell me. After Shannon Ocean suggested “Hoovertron”, Matt S. suggested some other names, one of which was “Thunder Wind”. Since the Hoovertron already had a name, I decided to use that name for this MOC. Anyways, the Thunder Wind is a multi-role one-person spaceship, the basic design of which was inspired by a microscale spaceship by nnenn:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=225171
It’s also the first ship that I’ve invested significant effort into making studless. By the way, I finally got my own camera, a Fujifilm FinePix A820.

It's a VTOL craft, shown here with landing gear down.

The pilot.

Well, it’s not completely studless. Since the studs themselves are smooth, one or two studs on an otherwise studless MOC shouldn’t be a big deal. Also in this shot, you can see the gun cannons and the floodlights, because space is dark.

The Thunder Wind has a pair of long- and short-range communication antennae, which make it useful for reconnaissance. However, when the ship is in flight mode, they are too long and touch the ground, which is why I had to put it on a jar.

The turret is built with a weird Bionicle piece:

The cockpit.

This is apparently the ship’s serial number or something. Apologies for the slight blurriness; I must have been moving the camera. It’s not like I have a tripod!

There is a spacious cargo hold.

This particular shipment happens to consist of guns.

Underside, showing the clamps for holding additional equipment in place. When they aren’t holding anything, they function as landing gear along with the leg in front of them, which is shown here retracted.

Depending on the mission profile, the clamps can hold the three different items that I built for them, or nothing. First is this extra engine, which boosts speed.

Close-up shot of the clamp mechanism. If you were to pick up the ship when the clamps are holding something, it would not fall because gravity holds them in place.

Next is the grabber claw for catching assorted space debris.

It caught something!

The only significant change that was made to the Barracuda after I posted it is the round tiles in the engines being replaced with silver cones, because I needed those tiles for the Thunder Wind. If you’re going to use a cone like this one, you can put a spear piece in it to make it look sharper and more realistic. Unfortunately, this only works for the chrome silver cones, because the spears only come in that color.

I thought these Life on Mars printed tiles would look good here.

The third item, and my personal favorite, is the big laser cannon.

Unfortunately, it’s not totally studless.

I used the piece from the old Sith Infiltrator set here.

This ship is also equipped with a tow cable.

The tow cable in use.

The Wicked Wolf always had this thing, just in case it needs to be rescued.

It has undergone three significant changes since I posted it: the pilot has a brown visor, the windscreen is trans-clear, and there are weapons on the wing pods, making its offensive capabilities at least equivalent to the FOCB.

One more change: the inverted slope on the bottom of the engine is now light blay to match the one on the top.

Thanks for viewing this MOC! I think I'll take a break from building spaceships for a while.

Response to Peter Steel:
You're probably wondering about all the round grill pieces, right? I have six: one in the Hoovertron, and five in this and its extra engine. To answer your question, I ordered them from BrickLink instead of buying three Watto's Junkyards. Also, just so everyone knows, Schlumm Gruuber reviewed this, too, but I had to delete it because it got messed up.

I like the podracer-type design, with the center surrounded by other parts.

Hello Nate, I´m not an expert in space ship building, but this one just looks really cool - especially the engines and the cockpit. Great job! Steffen

It looks great in all the configurations, very modern and original but however has some kind of "Classic space" spirit... In a word it's very good !

(My name is Emperor Juranius Willoughby, but that's a new name. After changing my name from Zackery Wiloughby, I experienced some glitches concerning reviews, so this is ALSO a test.) This is a great MOC. I love the clamp. The big gun = Oooooooooo + :) Love the VTOL engines. But it looks kinda vunerable to attack.
