Tracked tank, 80 tons, rail gun
About this creation
B640-RG (Rail Gun)
“The Sniper”
The Pimm Industries B640-RG is produced by the company's heavy vehicle division. This particular vehicle is assigned to the Highlands Company.
Specification:
Weight: 72,576 (80 tons)
Engine: Turbine powered by fuel cell technology
Crew: 3
Main Weapon:
Rail Gun, 32 megajoule, 5,000 m/s (Mach 14.7) with a 20kg (44lbs) slug (KE=250MJ or 184 million foot-pounds), 1-round/10s (recharge time). Using iron skinned, titanium coated, depleted uranium ammo. Can fire 1kg slugs at 20-rounds/s (KE=12.5MJ)
Secondary Weapons:
1) Double barrel, 20mm cannon (front mount)
2) 2 round, short range missiles (front mount)
Armour:
Undisclosed. Laminate design with experimental energy
absorption properties. Double thickness, light weight.
Classification:
Heavy, tracked, ground, extreme long-range assault tank.
The B640-RG is designed as an extreme long-range (up to 50km) assault vehicle. The 20kg depleted uranium slugs hit with a force of 250Mega-Joules – enough to devastate even the largest vehicles. The down-side is that the heat generated by the gun is immense, which requires an extremely large barrel housing multiple cooling units, or heat-sinks.
Originally built as a replacement for the mobile howitzer, the B640-RG quickly found favour as a tank ‘sniper’. One well place shot is capable of devastating almost any vehicle the enemy can field. With the 20kg round traveling at 18,000km/h (11,185miles/h) it is covering 5km (3.1 miles) every second.
The downside, of course, is that actually hitting a moving target at such distances is unlikely at best. In addition, the heat created by firing the main gun makes for a very slow firing rate with the 20kg slug.
If two or more enemy tanks should manage to close with the B640-RG, it may down one of the enemy machines but will likely be taken out by the other. The exception is that if it is loaded with 1kg slugs. These are generally used for taking out aircraft, but can be used to ‘mow’ through most enemy vehicles.
As a note, my daughter designed the barrel as I was making this tank. It was supposed to be a bed at first, but then she thought it would make a great main gun. It is bigger than I would like, but some things just can’t be changed for fear of feelings being hurt. That, and I love the gun, it is just a bit big for the tank turret (hence the back story about the cooling units).
Thanks to those who view and review.

Side shot showcasing my daughter's gun design.

Not the favourite view of the enemy.

Have to show off her fat butt.

Overall shot of the interior.

Panel design to allow for easier viewing of the interior.

Hatch open for entry/exit - design flaw: in event of power loss the crew will be trapped in the tank unless they blow the explosive bolts that will topple the turret off of the tank.

Navigator and his/her control panel. Also shows the driver/pilot who is "jacked in" through a bioelectrical interface. This allows for much quicker maneuvering and operation of the tank - "as fast as thought" (only minor surgical modifications required).

Turbine engine.

Gunner's controls.

The vehicles currently assigned to the Highland's Company. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for they know better than to mess with the Highlands Company!

I gather from your rail gun statistics that you know something about physics. The shape proves it more. Matter takes the path of least resistence and by angling the armor you increase chances of a ricochet. You should be designing real tanks! |

Um, what if the driver thinks he needs whiz while thought controling the tank? That could get messy. Still, very nice tank, looking forward to the next addition to the Highlands company. |

Very nice. The gun looks a bit like the snout of a pig, in a good way! =) I also love the slants of the side of the tank. Although I love your PIM tanks, I do think that they all lack a bit of detail. It will be hard to stick to the theme, but I think that they need a lot more greebeling, or at liest some studs. |

So your daughter was making a bed all in black? Must be a little goth chick. She made the right decision, turning it into a gun. Also, I was impressed to see the whole faction together -- I thought for sure you were cannibalizing previous MOCs for all those black slopes. |

Great lookin' tank, Lee! As Ocean mentioned, it's definitely got your signature. Can't say I mind the over-sized gun a bit (what are you compensating for?). It seems to work well with this design...even if you could sleep in it. Love the curves, love the interior. Nicely done! |

Man you Canucks are a sinister lot! Look at that thing; it's MISERY on two treads! Great minimal design. It looks very focused and keen to kill. The cockpit might be the coolest I've seen with the "jacked in" gunner. Oh, and the story about your daughter's contribution: VERY cute! LOL:) |
