My first large scale MOC is a recreation of the front facade of the Cook Bank building in Rhyolite, Nevada, a place I have never visited but which has a very photogenic online presence!

Rhyolite is a ghost town. It prospered from 1904-1916 when it was founded as a mining community. Nowadays, many buildings remain and an active preservation committee is working to restore the town site and keep it as a tourist destination. The site has been used as a backdrop for two movies, the most recent in the late 1990's when the Cook Bank building was cosmetically enhanced. My model is based on this enhanced version.

I started drafting my plans for this model in January 2007 shortly after winning one of the adult categories at a local Lego building contest (I made a model of a derelict house from an Alberta ghost town). My plan was to make a larger model of a building from a ghost town again and to be as faithful to the original as possible.

It was probably February of 2007 that I discovered BrickLink...Several thousand tan bricks later and we are here. The model is complete with just 5 days left before the 2008 Lego building competition (Silver Springs Community, Calgary, Alberta, Canada). I will be entering this into the Adult Buildings and Structures category. Wish me luck!

I added a vehicle and some figures for visual interest. My original plan had been to model the entire ruin, but unfortunately I ran out of time, bricks and budget. Instead of a 6-baseplate model, I ran with 4, but two of these were visually unimpressive so I added these other items to enhance them.

My Jego(tm). Loosely based on an open-top Jeep but with modifications to fit the timeframe and available bricks at my disposal. I would have preferred different wheels and the seating area needs to be lengthened for the scale of the figures. Oh well, it was a good, quick build and suits the style of the building.

I made some enhancements after I took this photograph, mainly changing the look of the wheels (adding hubcaps) and a second wing mirror and some junk in the trunk!

I love it! It's really neat to see another Lego enthusiast building Ghost Town MOCs. This one is esp. good because it really captures the design of the real thing. I've seen pictures of Ryolite, including this building and you've done an excellent job of depicting it in Lego. I'd love to see you make a mini-fig scale of this building as part of a Ghost Town street. Great job!
