General Grievous' command ship: the Invisible Hand
About this creation
Well, ladies and gentleman...oh, who are we kidding...Well gentleman, after nine months of late-night brick building, explanations, groveling, and apologies to my now-estranged wife, countless Bricklink orders, subsequent mortgages, loan sharks, black market sales of all non-essential organs, and more work-shirking than you can shake a stick at, the epic struggle to build my first SHIP has reached its conclusion... she’s finally finished.
So without further ado (drumroll...) I proudly present to you General Grievous’ Invisible Hand (Cue symbol crash aaaaaaaand....cricket...cricket.)
To start out with, I thought it would be fun to see a little comparison between the piece that inspired this creation, Erik Varszegi’s Venator, and my Invisible Hand. It’s not really invisible, though. I mean the ship, not my hand. Well, my hand’s not invisible either, but...say, did I mention I’ve been diagnosed A.D.D.?
I might point out that while Erik’s masterpiece retained the studs, I chose to be bold! Adventurous!! Daring!!! (or stupid, take your pick) and eliminate most of the studs. This, of course, meant thousands of tiles in addition to all of the other parts. To all you Bricklink sellers...you’re welcome!
I think the thing I’m happiest with here at the completion stage is...well, hmmm...THAT’S IT’S AT THE COMPLETION STAGE!!!!!! Although, the issue that she’s still hanging AND in one piece ain’t too bad either. By the way, why is it that ships are referred to as female? I mean this one kinda seems to have a masculine quality about it...maybe it's the fact that it’s, I dunno, shaped like a giant condom?
Here are some stats: She’s 231 studs long, 41 studs at the widest point, and weighs about 30 pounds. (Pretty curvy for a chick that skinny! ) She also enjoys rollerblading and Sushi. And hopes to meet a SHIP some day that likes her for more than her turboshaft. Okay that’s the bottom of the barrel. Moving on...
This pic shows off the curves fairly well, and all those stinkin’ antennae. I suppose you’d need em though, for satellite tv out there in deep space. I mean you’re on a ship full of a bunch of droids doin’ all the work. What else is there to do, other than sit around drinking blue milk and watching the pod races on tv? Wait, don’t answer that.
So here’s where the fun begins, and we get a few juicy details. If you look closely you’ll notice the inclusion of escape pods in the bridge section, torpedo bays along the hull, and a custom label created for the Trade Federation emblem (yeah, yeah...”Custom? Blasphemer!!! You’re gonna burn in Hell!!!! Yadda, yadda, yadda....”)
And now we come to one of my favorite sections of the ship. The curvature of the upper hull came out just swimmingly, if I do say so myself. Also, I think the Ground Command section’s got kind of a cool look to it.
Whoops! How'd that get in there?
Moving right along...We’ve got the Conning Tower and Observation section where our silver screen heroes confront the villainous Count Poo-poo...er, I mean Dooku...who’s very name strikes fear into the hearts of billions! Say it with with me...”Dooku”...It just gives me chills. Oh, no wait...that’s a fit of the giggles. My mistake.
I can hear Lucas now as he’s coming up with the design for this ship...”and antennae! Yeah, lot’s of antennae!! Gimme a whole mess of ‘em!!
A nice little detail section complete with Quad turbolaser cannons, Atmospheric shield generator, and other greebley-type-sudo-sci-fi-parefenal...parifina...para...uh...stuff.
Butt shot - always a winner.
One last last look here with yours truly (yes, this is to scale)and it’s hasta la vista to the ol' IH. On to things bigger and brighter! Or maybe actually smaller and dimmer. Anyway, thanks to Erik Varszegi for all of the inspiration, and a big thanks to all of you for putting up with my innane babble, which has mercifully come to a temporary end. I know, I know, you can’t get enough. But as someone said in the Lego Classic Space Forum...
“Less talking, more MOCing!”
See ya next time!
July 20, 2009 - Folks, I don't know what the holy @*&^%! is going on with the rating system, but at the time of this addendum here, the MOC should have something like 550 or 600. Just FYI. So now it's time to call for our overworked web master in my best Ozzy Osbourne impression as he calls for his wife... SSSSSSEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!!!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS "NOT SO" INVISIBLE HAND.
And if the Lego does not work anymore you can become a writer, that's great too!!! |

Hi I am new here to mocpagesn and I can´t upload any pictures. Do you know what that depends on, and can you help me, please?
Assuming you've followed the usual steps for uploading, my first guess would be that you may not be properly formatted with your images. Check to see that your pics are in something compatible...jpeg format being your best bet. You can join this group and post here if you'd like more assistance ( http://mocpages.com/group.php/2600). And welcome to MOCpages! |

It may sound like a broken record (one that you probably enjoy listening to) but excellent creation. 5/5 is clearly not a high enough a rating to give to a creation of this caliber. You know how your mouth gets when injected with Novocain? You try to speak and drool comes out with a few guttural sounds? Or maybe I'm thinking of PCP...Anyway, that's how I feel when I try to come up with words to describe this. I now understand the cry ringing out from your fellow AFOLs to give us something new to gaze glassy-eyed upon. I think Crimso has the right idea, 'The Visible Fist' sounds like the enemy ship to Phipson's Communications Universal Networking Transponder...~H |

why bother having ratings at all if they're all lies?
Exactly! |
|
|
If some glitch/hacker can add 3500 ratings to a moc in less then a day I say it's time to overhaul the rating system, why bother having ratings at all if they're all lies? I think the number of ratings a moc should have should be the EXACT amount of people in the "See who likes this" tab. That means no more ratings without an account. Since computers can't make an account automatically thanks to the e-mail safeguard, this would be a perfect solution. |

You broke it ? That's blasphemy ! how dare you ?!?!? I'm going to report you to the RSPCL (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Lego) for murdering one of the world's best lego ships !
Anyway, that wasn't my real reason to make a comment, I just read the other recent ones and noticed that :)
I was curious - anything this big is instantly impressive just for the sheer size, amount of work and parts in it - but I was wondering; my big lamborghini so far hasn't been as difficult as I thought whatsoever (OK, I haven't yet gotten to the parts I think will be hard), it's just very time-consuming and needs loads of parts; did you think that whilst buidling this ship ?
Anyway, good luck for the votes in the MOC awards :)
Dan
LOL. No, it was pretty much as difficult as I expected! Actually, the truth is, I didn't know what to expect when putting this monstrocity together. I just knew it was something I wanted to do, and felt like I would somehow manage to handle any difficulties that arose. It wasn't so much building with confidence, but more building with ignorance! Fortunately, things worked out, but I had no idea what I was in for when starting. Glad to hear you're still moving along with the Lamborghini...can't wait to see that finished!

Yeah, actually I think that would be the way to handle the proportions issue. I've thought about it being a little too thick, but actually a bit more length to the central section might have been the way to go. Oh well...it's long gone now. Hopefully the next big SHIP I put together will be better proportionally. |

Too much grade-school humor, not enough clever, mature, wit. Seriously, it looks more like a giant over-ripened metal summer squash with antennae then a condom. But its one helluva masterpiece, whether or not you can serve it grilled, sauteed, oven roasted, by itself, or where it really shines, when incorporated with herbs, spices, and select complimentary ingredients picked carefully for their cohesive synergy in cooking with ripe summer squash. |

Hey Mark, I have a quick question. For my project of building an Aurora clas ship from Stargate, i was kind of stumped on the design. Anyways i came up with a solution ( And probably a very costly solution) i was going to completely restart the ship and construct it in 3 diffrent kinds of interlocking modules using a techic frame. Have you ever tried building a four foot long ship using a modular system for the ship, and by modular i mean identical componets that can be added on to one another. And if so how stable was it and if you did what were its flaws and how would you recommned fixing them. |

yeah, the whole artificial gravity thing is screwy. but since they were in courescant's orbit and near enough to fall to the surface, then their gravity would conflict with the artificial gravity, so at some point they would be forced to turn the AG off. The invisible hand was past that point. |

This is just amazing. I can't think of any flaws whatsover. Except for the movie. Have you ever wondered why everyone can stand up on spaceships in Star Wars? Because of gravity generators, of course, you say. They were even around back in the days of the Millenium Falcon. Oh really? Then why does the gravity suddenly shift on the Invisible Hand when the ship points towards the planet? Did the gravity generator move? And then move back again when the ship leveled out? Yeah, explain THAT one to me. But anyway, the ship is almost perfect! |

Yeah, I knew you were 13. If people saw what I built when I was 13, I'd get laughed off of MOCpages. It's astonishing what you've done so far. As far as competing goes... I'll let others compete if they want to, and I'll judge to be nice, but personally that sort of building isn't for me. For me, Lego is creativity and personal expression, not a sport. |

its great yes yes it is. but I have a few small complaints. In the aft section it seems way to boxy and flat on the bottom. i would have rounded that out a bit. ( a very small ammount ) also its a bit too think in the section right before where it turns black. The tower should be a little bit taller, and thats about it. just over al for a providence it seems a bit to fat. other than that I bow to thee |

I just needed to look at the SECOND greates Lego creation on the internet again. Why the second you cry? Well compare it to "AircraftCarrier in Minifig Size Harry S. Truman" which can be found on Brickshelf by going on to most popular , where it's at No.1 , with 1498283 views , and when you see it your know why "Invisible Hand" is the second best. |

Incredible model of the Invisible Hand, very detailed model I have ever seen. I had an idea of making a model of the Republic Senete, unfortunently, i did not have the resources. "Lego lego" does not understand such a wonderful model in great detail of Genral Grevious's CIS flag ship of EP III. just amazing. |

This is for my own personal reflection really, but as of today, I started the disassembly process. Boy, I thought it was tough taking apart a beloved set...this was a whole new level sadness to see this one go! Ah, but with the death of every Lego creation there dawns a new day of creativity. Here's hoping the IH gets recycled into something even better...don't know what the frak that's going to be...but a geek can dream! |

this creation certainly is worthy of the highest rated moc in the genre of Starwars, you most have spent a lot time on it, seeing all those journal entries, it's amazing to see how detailed it really is. This is, together with that venator-class star destroyer, the best lego space cruiser there is (atleast on the Internet). sigh, what is ADD ? |

Wow, this is incredible! I have seen the name Invisible Hand appear a few times on the site, but I never knew what it was. Thankyou for reviewing my Rapier, it means a lot to have a builder of your callibre rate anything of mine so highly. As far as the striping on the wings and nose go, I couldn't figure out a way to make the lines parallel with the length of the swip without being too wide. The stripes are easily swaped out and I though of posting a few different setups to possibly represent multiple factions. They were originaly red, white and blue, but I thought the black, white, bley gave the best look. Thanks again peace - Patrick |

Awesome! Both the writing and the MOC! Speaking of Dooku's name... let's just say they had to change it in the portuguese version 'cuz it was a bad word. Just like Sifo Dias' name. The dudes had to become Count Dookan and Zaifo Vias or the movie would be M-rated. Utapau's name had the same fate. And I'm not making this stuff up! Good job! One thing though, I am sick of so many UCS-ships. Keep the same design on the outside and turn it into a mini-fig ship. I am sure something that big can accomodate a detailed interior and hold probably around AT LEAST 100 minifigs. Check out my Dictator-Class Star Destroyer, it holds 64 minifigs (could hold more), the best minifig SW ship to date. |

I would give it 9 out of 10, instead of 4 out of 5, not a 100% ONLY because the bottom of the ship, particularly the middle of the bottom, looks just a LITTLE bit too flat, unlike every other angle of the ship, anyway nice job |

This thing is one of the supreme LEGO creations in the LEGO Star Wars MOCing community and I'm proud that it graces our fair MOCpages. And that's the kind of awesome that brings tears of joy to me. And isn't it funny that one of your entries of this got moc of the day today? Well, enough talk. I may not like Episode 3, or General Grievous, or his ship, but I certainly can't fault this LEGO creation. It's perfect. One of those awe-inspiring creations of vast proportions that one can only gawk at. I only wish the photos were higher resolution so that I could gawk a little more. By the way, is it a coincidence that you posted this on a day when one of its previous stages was also MOC of the Day? ;-) |
