Invisible Hand
General Grievous' command ship: the Invisible Hand
About this creation
Well, ladies and gentleman...oh, who are we kidding...Well gentleman, after nine months of late-night brick building, explanations, groveling, and apologies to my now-estranged wife, countless Bricklink orders, subsequent mortgages, loan sharks, black market sales of all non-essential organs, and more work-shirking than you can shake a stick at, the epic struggle to build my first SHIP has reached its conclusion... she’s finally finished.

So without further ado (drumroll...) I proudly present to you General Grievous’ Invisible Hand
(Cue symbol crash aaaaaaaand....cricket...cricket.)

To start out with, I thought it would be fun to see a little comparison between the piece that inspired this creation, Erik Varszegi’s Venator, and my Invisible Hand. It’s not really invisible, though. I mean the ship, not my hand. Well, my hand’s not invisible either, but...say, did I mention I’ve been diagnosed A.D.D.?

I might point out that while Erik’s masterpiece retained the studs, I chose to be bold! Adventurous!! Daring!!! (or stupid, take your pick) and eliminate most of the studs. This, of course, meant thousands of tiles in addition to all of the other parts. To all you Bricklink sellers...you’re welcome!

I think the thing I’m happiest with here at the completion stage is...well, hmmm...THAT’S IT’S AT THE COMPLETION STAGE!!!!!! Although, the issue that she’s still hanging AND in one piece ain’t too bad either. By the way, why is it that ships are referred to as female? I mean this one kinda seems to have a masculine quality about it...maybe it's the fact that it’s, I dunno, shaped like a giant condom?

Here are some stats: She’s 231 studs long, 41 studs at the widest point, and weighs about 30 pounds. (Pretty curvy for a chick that skinny! ) She also enjoys rollerblading and Sushi. And hopes to meet a SHIP some day that likes her for more than her turboshaft. Okay that’s the bottom of the barrel. Moving on...

This pic shows off the curves fairly well, and all those stinkin’ antennae. I suppose you’d need em though, for satellite tv out there in deep space. I mean you’re on a ship full of a bunch of droids doin’ all the work. What else is there to do, other than sit around drinking blue milk and watching the pod races on tv? Wait, don’t answer that.

So here’s where the fun begins, and we get a few juicy details. If you look closely you’ll notice the inclusion of escape pods in the bridge section, torpedo bays along the hull, and a custom label created for the Trade Federation emblem (yeah, yeah...”Custom? Blasphemer!!! You’re gonna burn in Hell!!!! Yadda, yadda, yadda....”)

And now we come to one of my favorite sections of the ship. The curvature of the upper hull came out just swimmingly, if I do say so myself. Also, I think the Ground Command section’s got kind of a cool look to it.

Whoops! How'd that get in there?

Moving right along...We’ve got the Conning Tower and Observation section where our silver screen heroes confront the villainous Count Poo-poo...er, I mean Dooku...who’s very name strikes fear into the hearts of billions! Say it with with me...”Dooku”...It just gives me chills. Oh, no wait...that’s a fit of the giggles. My mistake.

I can hear Lucas now as he’s coming up with the design for this ship...”and antennae! Yeah, lot’s of antennae!! Gimme a whole mess of ‘em!!

A nice little detail section complete with Quad turbolaser cannons, Atmospheric shield generator, and other greebley-type-sudo-sci-fi-parefenal...parifina...para...uh...stuff.

Butt shot - always a winner.

One last last look here with yours truly (yes, this is to scale)and it’s hasta la vista to the ol' IH. On to things bigger and brighter! Or maybe actually smaller and dimmer. Anyway, thanks to Erik Varszegi for all of the inspiration, and a big thanks to all of you for putting up with my innane babble, which has mercifully come to a temporary end. I know, I know, you can’t get enough. But as someone said in the Lego Classic Space Forum...

“Less talking, more MOCing!”

See ya next time!

July 20, 2009 - Folks, I don't know what the holy @*&^%! is going on with the rating system, but at the time of this addendum here, the MOC should have something like 550 or 600. Just FYI. So now it's time to call for our overworked web master in my best Ozzy Osbourne impression as he calls for his wife... SSSSSSEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNN!!!!!

Quoting Mihe Stonee hahaha - sorry, but your last comment make me laugh Mark! your skill is amazing - we all could learn a lot from you! (i did it myself -i think-...) you don't have to be so "hard" to yourself ;-) ! how is your new progress doing ?
Thanks, Mihe! Life's being really turbulent right now, so new building opportunities are pretty hit or miss. But, I am working on a new ship all the same. I've set a goal to have it for Brickworld Indy in March, so hopefully I'll have something new for you guys to look at in a few more months.

Quoting Grant Snyder I seriously thought it was a picture of one on the internet and then realized it was Lego! It looks really accurate and amazing, completely love it!
Thanks so much, Grant. I love doing large scale, detailed works. This was an earlier project, and looking back there are several changes I'd make. But for my skill level at the time, I was happy with the way it turned out, and it was a blast to build!

What class! What skill! I actually mistaken it for a computer animated spaceship not in Lego bricks. I can also see that a lot of thought and sweat went into this model. Great work, I am sure that it defiantly payed off!

Quoting Benjamin Corey Is the support structure Lego, too?
There's a 1 x 3 running through the center for support, and then everything around that is Lego. You can see some of the creation process on various pages here: http://mocpages.com/folder.php/13559

Quoting Oran Cruzen Another very great work of Lego creationism from you! If I did this right I am the 1,445th like. WOW! Let me try that backwards !WOW. Ok, that did not quite work out, anyway. It really gets interesting how a combination of Lego bricks (plates, tiles, etc.) can be used for something that when done could put CGI to shame. So much LI (LEGO Imagination) on MOCpages.
Yeah, this one really had a good run. This was back in the day when six feet of Lego ship was fairly unusual, so it got a lot of attention. Since then, a ton of great creations have come to the community that put this one to shame. But, like you said, it's fantastic to see so many amazing creations within the global community. Hopefully this ship inspired a few to raise the bar in the same way that builders like Goldman, Jassim, and Varszegi inspired me.

Quoting Sam the first Holy-lonely-pony-eating-macaroni* this thing is huge! The details are just amazing! It looks stunning, uncannily realistic. If you can call a fantasy spaceship realistic. Whatever, it's sublime, and I love it! Top job. *I wish I came up with this myself....thanks Tomska.
Thanks, Tomska. My goal with the larger SHIPs is to make it transcend that "Lego look" and feel more like a scale model replica (degrees of success vary! ;). Thanks for the good word!

Dear Mr. Kelso, Several years ago I was introduced by this site and was inspired by the wonderful MOCs and humorous adventures of several users' SigFigs. I've had this idea kicking around in my head for a while now for an animated action-adventure-comedy involving various SigFig characters. I was wondering if you would approve of use of the "SigKelsoFiggy" and the "Invisible Hand." I'd like to have space battle(s) of reasonably high quality where the Invisible Hand would play a central role. In order to look good on HD video I would need much better resolution shots of the ship than is currently available here. So this is also a request for high-resolution images and/or CAD files if available. For more details please email me, (address is same as username) at gmail. Thanks, zapdotep

Quoting Bill Ding That's very good! Is there any metal or wood inside to support its 50 pound bulk? Also, does it have an interior?
Yeah, I used a wooden plank that ran the length of the interior. You can see it just a bit here: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/28883 There was only a small amount of interior work done in the form of the landing bay area, which you can see some of here: http://mocpages.com/moc.php/39577

I find myself coming back to this creation time and time again and it always inspires me to do more. I really hope that one day i have enough skill(and of course bricks XD) to do a giant scale star wars creation on my own. Keep up your awesome work, I love what you do with lego, building something tha big with bricks hat are smaller than a coin, it really is an awesome thing and requires a lot of experience and patience to mkae such an awesome lego model, I really admire you :)

Quoting ariklego ...The Director! I'll be the annoying, super-technical Star Wars geek for a second and point out that it's both out of proportion and, in comparison to that Venator, too long. Providence-class Destroyers (like the Invisible Hand) are roughly 100 meters shorter than Venators. Also, you made it too thick/too short-stubby. But hey, what kind of idiot could possibly prevent his jaw from dropping to the floor on grounds of it being slightly out of proportion? It's still one of the awesome-est ships on the 'Pages.
I agree 100% in regard to the proportions, and if this thing were still around, I'd go in and add a good 8 to 10 inches in the mid-section. As for how it compares to the Venator you see there - that I'm not really concerned about as the two MOCs were never seen together. I just wanted something in the general vicinity of Erik's work.

Quoting Thomas Benedikt I bet the guy who spammed this was upset that the top 5 mocs of all time for a number of years had been awful CGI models. I also bet he was fully expecting to get banned for doing it ;)
I can appreciate his frustration if that was the case. Some of us are very glad he didn't get banned, though. Of course, if it were a just world, Mon Calimari would be holding that no. 1 position right in front of Goldman's Zero Hour. Unfortunately, the spamming is out of control and any glory that comes from the ratings no longer holds any real meaning. But maybe that's best, as what should be most important to us is the building itself.

My God! I love it! You really are one of the biggest builders on this site..... but just to say that building big isn't the best. I mean, sure you get all the detail but! How did you find all that free time? Maybe I should become a painter. lol Anyway great job on the "studless" creation. - KoB3

I actually prefer the Rusty Ferret, but there is no doubt that this is an(other) utterly outstanding MOC. Great details and the colour scheme works really well. Something that keeps me awake at night on my own MOC, i.e. will it look like a flying carton of grey milk. The WIP journals on how you put these marvels together is also well appreciated, at least by me!

Quoting Tyler Halliwell Didn't this used to have 4000 or so likes? Where did they go?
It did, yeah. We found that a member (who shall remain anonymous) actually spammed the daylights out of this page...in a good way. I think he was annoyed that this was getting trumped by other less deserving pages that had been bolstered with false "I Like its" (ILI), and fought back on my behalf. Sean erased all of non-legit ILI's here, which left the numbers where you see them now. Now if we could just level the playing field by eliminating all of the spammed ratings on everyone else's pages. That's why I always tell builders not to put too much emphasis on the numbers. Unfortunately, we just can't trust 'em these days.

This is a SHIP that deserves to be the most popular MOC on the MOCpages. There are many reasons, one of them being that even though you could stop at 100 studs to make it a SHIP you went over double that! And that's truly a feat worth praising. There is truly much detail put to that, for instance the escape pods or the LOTS AND LOTS OF ANTENAE! In all my years of MOCing (it's been half a year posting on MOCpages) I have never seen a MOC of this quality. If anythng could make me speechless, this would do it. Most certainly. Back to the MOC, shall we? Stripes add beautiful detail and the greebling is nice, although simple. At least it's not too messy, right? The engine shot is perfect and the fact that it's an optical illusion (that's the only way I could explain it forming into a donkey if you look at it one way) is just breathtaking. And because I couldn't talk about it, I started writing. Sorry, is this thing getting a bit too long? It seems to me that way. It's size is rather satisfying, I must say, as I've said in the beggining. A SHIP this long deserves a comment equally long! Now for some criticism: Nothing is forced or imperfect in this MOC, although it has a problem with something else. Not enough detail shots and the size of photos is rather small. I belive that this pretty much can't even begin to describe the genius behind this design and scale. Or the money put into it.

this is a dream ship! i made a dream police hq with 6 brand new lego kits,it cost me about $600 the cost of your dream creation is wonderous! as an artist i don t want to consider price as a designing consideration factor,as the creation freedom should be unlimited! i am so happy for you and us all, that you could succede in creating such a fantassy ship and and bring it alive in reality! how much does it cost to have the biggest and most detailed lego star wars ship in the world? i ll make a guess $7000 what i can t guess is why destroy it? just from the public response i think someone must be willing to pay over $20 000 for it! this piece of art was unique! anyway, thanks for showing us this extraordinary dream project, for, without you we would have never seen such a magnificient lego star wars ship! it stands as a reminder that everything is possible,if you get your mind to it and a lot of time! all comes for those who wait! 9 months ! that was your baby in some sense! congratulations, good show! and good luck on your next project!

Assuming you've followed the usual steps for uploading, my first guess would be that you may not be properly formatted with your images. Quoting Thomas Benedikt why bother having ratings at all if they're all lies?
Exactly!
  July 21, 2009
If some glitch/hacker can add 3500 ratings to a moc in less then a day I say it's time to overhaul the rating system, why bother having ratings at all if they're all lies? I think the number of ratings a moc should have should be the EXACT amount of people in the "See who likes this" tab. That means no more ratings without an account. Since computers can't make an account automatically thanks to the e-mail safeguard, this would be a perfect solution.

Quoting Dan the Man "it's long gone now" !!! You broke it ? That's blasphemy ! how dare you ?!?!? I'm going to report you to the RSPCL (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Lego) for murdering one of the world's best lego ships ! Anyway, that wasn't my real reason to make a comment, I just read the other recent ones and noticed that :) I was curious - anything this big is instantly impressive just for the sheer size, amount of work and parts in it - but I was wondering; my big lamborghini so far hasn't been as difficult as I thought whatsoever (OK, I haven't yet gotten to the parts I think will be hard), it's just very time-consuming and needs loads of parts; did you think that whilst buidling this ship ? Anyway, good luck for the votes in the MOC awards :) Dan
LOL. No, it was pretty much as difficult as I expected! Actually, the truth is, I didn't know what to expect when putting this monstrocity together. I just knew it was something I wanted to do, and felt like I would somehow manage to handle any difficulties that arose. It wasn't so much building with confidence, but more building with ignorance! Fortunately, things worked out, but I had no idea what I was in for when starting. Glad to hear you're still moving along with the Lamborghini...can't wait to see that finished!

Yeah, actually I think that would be the way to handle the proportions issue. Too much grade-school humor, not enough clever, mature, wit. Seriously, it looks more like a giant over-ripened metal summer squash with antennae then a condom. Hey Mark, I have a quick question. For my project of building an Aurora clas ship from Stargate, i was kind of stumped on the design. Anyways i came up with a solution ( And probably a very costly solution) i was going to completely restart the ship and construct it in 3 diffrent kinds of interlocking modules using a techic frame. Have you ever tried building a four foot long ship using a modular system for the ship, and by modular i mean identical componets that can be added on to one another. And if so how stable was it and if you did what were its flaws and how would you recommned fixing them.

This is just amazing. I can't think of any flaws whatsover. Except for the movie. Have you ever wondered why everyone can stand up on spaceships in Star Wars? Because of gravity generators, of course, you say. They were even around back in the days of the Millenium Falcon. Oh really? Then why does the gravity suddenly shift on the Invisible Hand when the ship points towards the planet? Did the gravity generator move? And then move back again when the ship leveled out? Yeah, explain THAT one to me. But anyway, the ship is almost perfect!

Yeah, I knew you were 13. If people saw what I built when I was 13, I'd get laughed off of MOCpages. It's astonishing what you've done so far. As far as competing goes... DANG. This is the Star Wars MOC to end all Star Wars MOCs. I got to go to a Lego Store (West Nyack, part of a gigantic mall), but SEEING THE INVISIBLE HAND by MARK KELSO?! Beats piling legos into a cup for $15 ANY day……

Quoting Chris Cooksey last picture is the falsest thing. no its not to scale, only in the amateur photoshopers world.
I usually delete negative comments, since they only provoke arguements...but I think I'll leave this one for a while and allow others to witness your stunning powers of observation. OF COURSE it's photoshopped (duh!). As for scale...just look at the journal entries. (Wow, this guy's a real genius...wonder how he learned to type?)

Kurkumera: Thanks for the follow-up. I actually deleted the first one, thinking it was a negative comment (due to the two smileys). I'd leave such comments, but others get defensive on my behalf, and arguments can break out...so it's easier if I just delete them. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up, and for leaving the additional comments!

its great yes yes it is. but I have a few small complaints. In the aft section it seems way to boxy and flat on the bottom. i would have rounded that out a bit. ( a very small ammount ) also its a bit too think in the section right before where it turns black. The tower should be a little bit taller, and thats about it. just over al for a providence it seems a bit to fat. other than that I bow to thee

I just needed to look at the SECOND greates Lego creation on the internet again. Why the second you cry? Well compare it to "AircraftCarrier in Minifig Size Harry S. This is for my own personal reflection really, but as of today, I started the disassembly process. Boy, I thought it was tough taking apart a beloved set...this was a whole new level sadness to see this one go! Ah, but with the death of every Lego creation there dawns a new day of creativity. Here's hoping the IH gets recycled into something even better...don't know what the frak that's going to be...but a geek can dream!

this creation certainly is worthy of the highest rated moc in the genre of Starwars, you most have spent a lot time on it, seeing all those journal entries, it's amazing to see how detailed it really is. This is, together with that venator-class star destroyer, the best lego space cruiser there is (atleast on the Internet). sigh, what is ADD ?

Wow, this is incredible! I have seen the name Invisible Hand appear a few times on the site, but I never knew what it was. Thankyou for reviewing my Rapier, it means a lot to have a builder of your callibre rate anything of mine so highly. As far as the striping on the wings and nose go, I couldn't figure out a way to make the lines parallel with the length of the swip without being too wide. The stripes are easily swaped out and I though of posting a few different setups to possibly represent multiple factions. They were originaly red, white and blue, but I thought the black, white, bley gave the best look. Thanks again peace - Patrick

Good job! One thing though, I am sick of so many UCS-ships. Keep the same design on the outside and turn it into a mini-fig ship. And now to sit back, relax, enjoy a beer and a cigar with your favorite burro, and watch the well-deserved accolades roll in. Well done, my friend. I'm kinda sad that it's over, though... I always thought that on a long trip, getting there was more than half the fun.

I may not like Episode 3, or General Grievous, or his ship, but I certainly can't fault this LEGO creation. It's perfect. One of those awe-inspiring creations of vast proportions that one can only gawk at. I only wish the photos were higher resolution so that I could gawk a little more. By the way, is it a coincidence that you posted this on a day when one of its previous stages was also MOC of the Day? ;-)

I don't say this much anymore, but I am truly speechless. You did an incredible job. The colors are exellent, the shape is perfect, along with everything else. Best capitol ship on MOCpages in my opinion, congratulations.
