Spartan vs Wolverine
Spartan mech vs. Wolverine mech
About this creation
I got the idea from another mech builder to make a mech in a green and white color scheme, since those are the school colors of the Spartans of Michigan State University, my alma matter. But I couldn't build the Spartans a mech without building a smaller mech in yellow and blue to represent our archrivals, the University of Michigan Wolverines (okay, their colors are "maize" and blue, but yellow is as close as Lego gets). Whoo-hoo, Spartans win again!

The 8.5 meter, 55 ton Wolverine mech confronts the 10.5 meter, 80 ton Spartan mech...

...and the Wolverine pilot makes the right call.

"Run away, run away..."

I must admit, the Wolverines usually have a better football team, but I think we beat them more often than we really have a right to.

The Spartan pilot bears the grim, determined visage of Sparty, the MSU mascot. The Wolverine pilot's vaccuous grin is pretty typical of U of M grads.

I sure hope no one ends up liking the Wolverine better. I should have made it crappier looking. Too late now...

The Spartan is a smallish Assault mech, and sports large beam weapons in each arm, twin missle batteries, and a top-mounted auto cannon.

Before this project, I was kind of regretting buying the new X-wing set, but it came in handy, having both green parts and white parts.

   The ever popular thruster shot.

The Spartan possesses the powerful thighs of a female East German Olympic swimmer. According to Keith Goldman, you just don't see that on mecha anymore.

Would you have known if I didn't tell you that I didn't Brasso off the graphics on the R2D2 bodies?

   Go Green! Go White!

The Spartans won the Final Four basketball tournament in 2000.

The cockpit of the Spartan is, well, spartan.

The Wolverine is a medium mech, carrying a large beam weapon in each arm and two small missle batteries. Clearly, the Spartan would whale on it.

My mechs don't have hands or heads, but it isn't because I don't know how to build them. Okay, yes it is.

The backsides of U of M coeds never look THIS good.

...in case you saw the third picture back and thought, "I wonder what it would look like with the toes pointed the other way?"

   "Dolphins don't live in igloos!"

This is what the Wolverine looks like to a pack of cruise missiles.

The deluxe Wolverine cockpit appointments were paid for by the pilot's dad. Dad paid for the Classic Space tatoo on his chest, too.

This construction shot shows the Spartan's internal leg structure. I thought it might not be strong enough, but it turned out to work very well.

It would probably also be reasonably posable if I hadn't added all the armor.

For those of you not in the know, Leonard Hoffman pioneered the thumbs-up self portrait pose-with-MOC. Those of us who follow in his footsteps (okay, me) call it the "Lenny Shot".

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I was active on MOCpages from about 2004-2006, and every once in a while one of my old creations ends up in MOC of the day (I think it's just a random draw). My MOCs from 2008 to the present can be found on Flickr, if you're interested: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30715255@N04/ I've recently started posting on MOCpages again to participate in the Metal Legion group. This post is now seven years old. I still like the builds, but obviously there are things I'd do differently now. The photos are pretty poor, however. These days I've got a better camera, better lighting and better editing. I'm still no pro, but I've improved. I'm still a Michigan State fan (graduated in 1995!), but I moved away from the US three years ago, and they don't show US college sports on TV here very often, so I haven't kept up with the MSU athletics very well.

you should give the spartan a sword and shield and you should give the Wolverines mech Wolverine Claws.....i know it has nothing to do with it but it would make things a bit more interesting.....

"The deluxe Wolverine cockpit appointments were paid for by the pilot's dad. Dad paid for the Classic Space tatoo on his chest, too." Sparti-ZING! All of the burns here are great. And oddly accurate. Specifically the one mentioning coeds. I also really like the way you sum up the rivalry. "We beat them more than we should have the right to." Well-said! Also, cool builds.

Yes! What's better than fighting walmart Wolverines on the ESPN boards? Fighting clone kiddies on MOCPages that know nothing of the rivalry! I am also a State Alum (2009). GO GREEN!

I think all the smack directed at UM is hilarious, seeing how they have beaten the Spartans more often than not (we're talking about football right?). I'm not on any particular side, but still. >Eric

Heh, yeah I live in Michigan (obviously). Nice Mechs! And that leg design looks nice, whenever I try to make a mech I get stuck on the leg part...I migh use, but give credit to you of course. The chunky legs on the spartan look really good too...

I love the scale, particularly of the green and white one, but the color scheme makes it hard to read the shapes of the bodies. If I could give fewer than one smiley off for that, I would. I don't quite follow the leg structure on the Spartan, but it sure is interesting. I don't see any knees...

very cool mechs, I like the color schemes as well, you don't often see those... maybe I should make a blue and yellow ship. The only (minor) thing I don't like are the weapons on each arm, they need more... blaster-y bits ;) instead of just open ports

Great set, however I would have added some sort of auto-surrender option to the wolverine model- it would seem fitting for their style of play. The Lenny shot is also a classic (also from someone who tries to follow in his footsteps).

Awesome work. Truly creative use of the pieces. I've always been a fan of mechs, and these are some of the best I've seen.
