Black Fantasy contest entries for Nannan's contest

Yes, I along with thousands of other CSF first-timers
are adding their creations to the deluge of Dark Nasties.

Firstly I should add a disclaimer or two:
1. My beasties are all tentacle-less. I did Bricklink
some a while ago and I'm still trying to track them down.
Please forgive me Nanny! (I hope you like technic axels...)
2. Some of my creations here feature non-black parts. I saw
my opening in Nannan's rules here: "You may use a non-black
piece if it is crucial to the structure of the MOC".
3. Hope you’ve brought your reading glasses with you cuz
these are heavy on story and light on brickwork ;)

Allow me to introduce:

Entropy Engine
Psyren with Sycophant
Harvester of Sorrow
Madness Motor

First up: the Entropy Engine.
The Entropy Engine floats effortlessly over the Earth,
it’s exotic machinery speeding up the natural decay of the universe,
invisibly and silently. In its presence, buildings crumble,
machinery rusts, plants wither and animals age and die.
Weapons are useless against it; tank shells fired at the
Entropy Engine for example deteriorated as they neared
their target, only to impact the machine as dust.
Soldiers may as well throw fistfuls of sand at it.
However, it’s strength does fade with distance.
If you’re lucky enough to catch sight of the silent machine
and flee in time, you may escape with only slight aging effects,
such as hair loss or senility.

Build notes: The EE was conceived of something of a
poor cousin to Nannan’s Cyclopean Virtue. Also an excuse to
indulge my love of abstract sculpture and a homage to
the KISS design principle: Keep It Simple Stupid!
I’ve already planned a spin-off creation of the EE so sorry if
you guys hate it but you haven’t seen the last of it :)

The Psyren and Sycophant
Just like the Sirens of myth, this female machine sings
an alluring song to lure her victims to their end.
And for her instrument, instead of a harp, she uses
the tormented cries of her victims now permanently welded
to her depraved frame to sing her song of seduction...
Attended by the ever-eager Sycophant: wing-ed metallic vulture.

Build notes: I wanted one of my designs to have a
totemic look to it. Originally the Harvester did but I think
it worked out better on the Psyren. Wanted horn-like thingies
on the head too. Actually, it would be cool if She had a
weird alien harp made from skeleton bones...man,
why didn't I think of that 2 months ago?! The eye kinda
reminds me of Maximillian from Disney’s Black Hole.
Man that thing used to creep me out; heck, it still does!

At first She had a 1x1 dish for an eye (too clumsy looking) and the victims had legs. Was going to have tentacle wrapping around them as well.

Harvester of Sorrow *nods to Metallica*
This mechanical beast of dark vanity likes to adorn its
wretched hide with the beautiful wreckage of a dying civilisation.
Where else in the universe can one find such exquisite debris?
Lovely curios of mankind’s last days to cover its
naked crookedness. With such a fetish for decay and damage,
the Harvester forever skulks around the rubble of the Dead Zones,
picking out new trinkets of destruction to display to no-one.

Build notes: The main influence on the Harvester came from
the Decorator Crab, which attaches seaweed and other litter
to camouflage itself from predators. I wanted to twist that
notion to a creature that found beauty in ruin and created
something lovely to wear, like the dude from Texas Chainsaw Massacre
and his skin mask. The Harvester went thru several incarnations,
the earlier ones either looking too Acklay-ish or not pathetic enough.
I wanted something really ugly, hump-backed, deformed and grovelling.
After a total rebuild, I was finally happy.
The articles of ruin the Harvester carries are symbolic in nature.
They include a hospital sign and Christian cross; emblems of hope,
a missile; sign of military failure (which the Harvester wears,
as a child might wear a shell necklace from a trip to the beach),
remains of a park bench; where lovers may have once revendouzed
(a little oversized for minifigs however imo), a burnt out car
and last but not least, the remains of a Snack Bar;
homage to my first ever set: #675 :D

I trialled different head designs.
(What a difference adjusting the lighting levels makes eh?)

The Harvester is all it's naked revulsion.

First design with the totmic-ish head which later was incorporated onto the Psyren.

A bit better but still not grabing me. A total rebuild was in order...

Madness Motor
The enigmatic Madness Motor stands sentinel-like,
broadcasting psychosis in the Long Night.
Why murder helpless victims when you can enjoy
watching them descend into lunacy?

Build notes: Not a completely serious build;
just a last minute “throw-together” actually after I realised
I could build a T4 Bacteriophage from my existing pieces.
Aren’t they cute? Possibly the most numerous organisms
on planet Earth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phage_ecology
Sorry, but I love science!

Help, now I can't stop! I'm addicted to making this little nasties...

Various inspiration:

Decorator crabs

10 years of wicked metal album covers like this:

*girly squeal*

T4 Bacteriopahge

And that, ladies and gents, is that. Which one of the four
is your fave? Ok, which one do you hate the least??
Good luck to all in the comp. There are many, MANY great entries
and lots of inspiration! I’ve no delusions of grandeur in winning
but I learned a lot building for this comp and had heaps
of fun in the process. Cheers to Nanny for posting the comp!

All I can say is.. if the T4 bacteriophage gave you some inspiration.. that's fully deserving of five smilies.

Vnice! My fav is the bacteriophage, although they are all cool. Just a question, how do you make the white background like that? It really looks cool....

Indeed they are rather addictive. I'd say your best one is the Harvester, with buildings attached. But I'm also rather fond of the bacteriophage, which I recognized instantly. Nice!

The mocs are great but as you know, I tend to look past the surface. I did that here too and guess what I found. Your five is not for the mocs (although they deserve it), it's for taking me back to my childhood with maximillian there. I wonder what ever happened with him and Reinhardt after the Cygnus was pulled into the black hole... hey, great mocs ~ Chris.

That havester thing was really neat. But the Bacteriophage one was my favorite. I love bacteriophages. They are so very interesting, not to mention awesome looking, even if they could kill all the Humans...

Cool ideas abound! It seems to me like the Harvester wouldn't break any codes of conduct.. You have the unadorned version and it's not like it gonna go around decorating itself with only black stuff. Creative as always!

I love how your creature has items going through it and is stuck on it. Thats awsome!

Some neat ideas here, Shannon. Buildwise, I like the Harvester best, with all the debris on it's back. So, for the contest rules, would that stuff be considered a dio? Interesting...

They pale in comparison to others I've seen, especially Nannan's. They're not bad, but this is one of your worst MOCs.
