Heavy Load Functional Mobile Crane
About this creation
There are a lot of amazing mobile cranes posted on the Internet. Most of them are replicas of real world cranes, so I had to do something special to make mine stand out in the crowd. All the cranes I have seen have at most 2 telescope joints, so of course I had to make one with 3. It is based on the truck I used for the old nuclear waste transport, but I had to completely redesign it because of the extreme weight of the crane.
Since it isn't based on a real model, I have had total freedom to make it as stable and durable as possible.
More pictures, and pictures of the old Nuclear Waste Tranport can be found in the Brichshelf gallery
The steering mechanism

Here is how it compares to the huge official LEGO XXL mobile crane

THAT IS AWESOME!!!!! so there is 10 wheel steering an accomplishment in its self, X-shape stabilisers(sorry about the spelling), an awesome cab and motor housing in front of the wheels that looks slightly futuristic and a four piece, three telescoping section boom that reaches further than any lego crane I have seen! just AMAZING!!! you should have entered it in the technic challenge when it was on cranes it would have won easily. |

I'm really impressed with your crane, as an engineering student I can appreciate the careful design and planning you took. I know this would be spilling your secrets, but do you have any pictures of the turntable and/or bottom of the superstructure? Also did you do any weight tests to see how much it could raise?
The picture with the steering mechanism is the only one I have showing the insides, but it should also be sufficient. The turntable is a simple old Technic turntable reinforced with some tiles. The weights of the objects in the pictures are about as much as it can lift. That is, a 9V battery fully extended and a LEGO crane when only extended a little.
