Power armor mecha with hand-held weapon.
About this creation
A compact, posable power armor design, smaller than a mech, bigger than a hardsuit, probably about the size of an extra large landmate.

The goals for this design were compact size, good posability and proportions, and a common enough selection of parts that I could make a whole squad of them.

I'm planning to make a bunch of these in different color schemes, with variations on weapons and equipment, sort of along the lines of the different Cyclones the characters used in the third Robotech series (aka Genesis Climber Mospeada).

At minifig scale, this mech would be about 16 feet tall, a little larger than I would have liked, but I'm willing to live with it.

Influences include Chris Maddison, Jeremy Sproat, Karim Nassar and Brayton Orchard. You can find them all except Brayton in the Lego Mecha Hall of Fame:

"No guns? What are we supposed to use, harsh language?"

Not as cool from the back, but not too bad. This one has missle packs mounted, but I plan to experiment with other items, like thrusters for zero G ops for example. Maybe a snow cone maker.

Rather than try to fit a whole minifig inside, I contented myself with having his head sticking out the top, and imagining that the rest of him is inside the armor. If that bothers you, go ahead and assume that he's a combat cyborg, and the head is all that's left of the original body.

The power armor with rough versions of Chris Maddison's Gamut (left) and Karim Nassar's Lightfoot (right). The Gamut holds an entire minifig, but I found myself wanting more posability and bulk. I liked the proportions of the Lightfoot, and that's where I got the idea to use just the head of the fig (and the now-commonplace fig legs for hands), but the joints only rotate along the X-axis.

I've been frustrated for a while trying to come up with a decent power armor design, but yesterday it all sort of came together.

"I know what you're thinking, did I fire 5,000 plasma rounds, or only 4,999? Well, to tell you the truth, in all the excitement I kinda lost track myself. So you have to ask yourself, do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?"

I think the UFO helmet (with the lame graphics polished off) makes a good heavily-armored looking helmet for a power armor where the operator's head is exposed.

The hand-held pulse laser rifle. A big long-barreled, Gundam-style cannon would have looked cooler, but the design would have been too clumsy and delicate with that much unbalanced weight. The sighting device under the barrel was copied from Mladen Pejic, whose work you will also find in the Lego Mecha Hall of Fame.

Yes, that's me. I've been posting only to Flickr for the last four years, but came back to MOCPages due to Mike R.'s involvement in the Metal Legion. Thanks for the compliment! |

A great design, dude! I built a War Drone, which basically is a slight variation of your Power Armor. |

I still remember this design from last year when I built a battle droid using your instructions as a template. Unfortunately, a virus took out my computer and my old account and pictures were all lost. Maybe it's time to try again and build an even better one this time around! |
