Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!
About this creation
I'm a huge fan of the 1930's author H.P. Lovecraft, and many times have considered building some of his twisted work out of Legos. The Elder Things have always appealed to me, so I decided to build one first. After reading the discription multiple times, I formed a visual design and worked from there.
Elder Things, or Old Ones, are a creation of H.P Lovecraft and are found in his stories Dreams in the Witch House, At the Mountains of Madness and Shadow out of Time. They are barrel-shaped creatures about 6 feet high with a starfish-like head at the top. Five comb-like wings spread out from crevices where the staves on a barrel would be. At the bottom, there is a star-shaped arrangement of five tentacles. Elder Things are amphibious, and are neither animal nor vegitable, instead a hybrid of both. More on Elder Things can be found here. I tried the best to capture them in my model, but was forced to leave out one wing and one tentacle.
Ssshh! He's sleeping! Elder Things are capable of incredibly long hibernation, and can sleep for millions of years. They must feel really damn rested when they're done. But when they wake up, they can be in a pretty sour mood.
Here is a reference picture from all-knowing Wikipedia. This is the most accurate picture I could find, as it resembles what I imagined when I first read Mountains of Madness.
Another picture, this one is in 3D, or as I call it, "visual stereo". Remember, there is no definite drawing of this creatures, so you have to take out a creative license when you create image of model of one.

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy
Mike, as a huge Lovecraft fan I might have to steal your idea for one of my next MOCs (Mountains of Madness). I remembered your Elder Thing and your Masque of Pain from 2010 and I must admit that you had some influence on me. Thanks.
Thanks for the compliment Mr. Xeno! Feel free to copy this model, and I do look forward too seeing your ATMOM creation. Will there be shoggoths? |

I am actually quite torn upon seeing this. It is EXACTLY what I was planning for my Elder Thing, with the exception that I was going to use rounded cones instead of octagonal ones. How dare you read my mind like that??!? |

Hey, I just finished "The Ice Limit" by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, and it is very Lovecraftian. I can't name specific examples, or it would ruin the ending, but any story taking place on a frozen island, with a team of explorers trying to understand an extremely mysterious object...Ewen, you'd like it too. http://www.amazon.com/Ice-Limit-Douglas-Preston/dp/0446610232 |

Heh. I just finished At the Mountains of Madness. I'm a bit creeped out. Hmm... Maybe I'll make a shoggoth... |

Nice work! By the way. In your homepage picture you are in pipe I am guessing... Are you covered in sweat or human excrement? Lol sorry that was gross. And I too own the necronomicon I would like to see some fish creatures. Like in the nameless city. Mabey I'll have to take a crack at that eh? or mabey that could be a contest in our group. |

Awesome. "The Necronomicon speaks of such things...the primal white jelly...the eyes in the darkness...the color out of space..." |
