The Batmobile "Tumbler" from the movie Batman Begins
About this creation
I hadn't touched Lego in 15 years and after playing the Lego Star Wars video game I became hooked again. Looking around on a few sites I found that my favorite superhero, Batman has his own line of Lego sets available, along with their own official Lego Tumbler set. I searched around and found a few photos of it and was disappointed enough that I decided to make my own.
Using Lego's own Digital Designer Program, over a period of about a month in February/March 2008 I created my own Tumbler, smaller in scale and I believe more true to the movie version. A couple of hours here and there of constant refining, trying different techniques to define it's unique shape I finally was ready to order.
Ordering the parts from Bricklink I was able to use more variety in parts than available in Lego Digital Designer. I switched out the round steering wheel for a plane style wheel, chrome silver hubs instead of light bluish grey and I was able to replace all the black 1x2 grill pieces with 1x2 tiles, which for some reason aren't available in LDD. I also picked up a Lego Batman minifig from ebay which fits perfectly inside the cockpit, cape and all.
Below are some better lit photos from all angles, including an example of how the roof of the batmobile opened giving access to the drivers seat.

Finally, with it all complete, what else to do but pull it apart and see what else I could make with it? I decided to have a go at making an alternative build of an updated Batwing. If you recall from Tim Burton's Batman film from 1989, the Batwing plane is shaped like the bat emblem that is on Batman's chest. So with that in mind I tried to create a new version based on the bat emblem from Batman Begins. The batwing itself isn't terribly great, but I was quite happy with how it recreates the new emblem when viewed from above.

I'd say one of the best out there, especially your camo version. Now I think you've gotta make another one from the new movie! With the batpod and all. As soon as I saw the batpod come off of the tumbler I knew it had to be done, I'll take a stab at it, you should too! |
