4404 Brain Busters
4404 Land Busters with added steering, engine and drivetrain - all without raising the body!
About this creation

Here I picked apart a stock 4404 Land Busters, and shoehorn in all the steering, engine and drivetrain.

Well, this is something anyone who bought a 4404 should try. (I'll admit) So what's so special?

I didn't raise the entire body like others do. I wanted to add drivetrain without raising the body, and this is why this took me countless months to come up with...

... until 8435 came out which finally shone light on how to do the rear.

I named this truck for the fact that I almost busted my brain building it.

So this "Brain Busters" now has elements from 4404 (of course), 8858, 8465 and 8435.

Scroll down for a short story that involves the Brain Busters.

Bottom of the body. The steering and drivetrain are both split into two parts, the engine itself and the time-honoured "hand of God" steering by a knob on roof, and the V6 engine that is grouped with the body, taking a page from the 8858 manual. See the chassis attachment points.

Aargh! It fell of the mountain into the pit of death! The plush pig besides it fell down here some time during the last century and now it has been assimilated. Guess what will happen to BB?

The back. The tail lights was modded back when I built 4404 per instructions before coming up with ideas for BB. The blue knob is the HOG steering knob. (Snow removal vehicles have trans blue beacon in Canada.)

Body and chassis. The rear is a traverse pendular axle straight from 8435. It really helped. The chassis is designed to follow the profile of stock chassis as closely as possible, so it will fit in nicely.

The body goes on the chassis like this, clicks into place nicely when aligned right.

Check out the clutch gear here. It is part of the drivetrain. The axle going through it is for steering. When the body is secured, that part of both geartrains will engage nicely with their chassis sections. The entire front end has ideas from 8858, and 8465. Earlier prototypes was based on 8435.

Another mountain top shot. Take this one for wallpaper if you like.

Top view. The hood has to be raised by one plate to clear the engine underneath.

   Here the story begins.

The Technic guys first dropped off a 8436 engine they found left to rust somewhere out there.

And now they're back with the 8480 satellite.

   The guys getting off.

While Blue hops off BB, Red opens the tailgate.

OUCH! IT HURRTTTTTS!!! What's wrong with the tailgate falling on me??!!

Blue: We still have to get it out...

and haul it off, even with a big bulge on your head, Red!

Great engineering job, considering one of the main complaints with this set IS it's lack of steering. Although I don't own the set, It'd be great if you could put up instructions for the mods required.
