Childhood Memories (1): Very Early Town & Train Layout
Here are a few digitalized old slides of a very early town and train layout. I think I built it in 1994, at any case I still was pretty young and just started out paying attention to colorization: as you notice, only one of the self-made buildings (the big white villa) was colorized. Due to reasons of playabilty, I wanted to keep the streets close enough to the borders of the tables, whereas the train tracks were rather centered. Also, it seemed more fun having a looong highway throughout the town, making it tons of fun to drive through with my early, still uncolorized but already pretty big trucks (6-stud-wide, even a big car trailer standing on the parking lot - itīs very hard to recognize because of the angle of the picture, though.). The 12V illumination only covered a few buildings or special places at that time.
About this creation
As you can see, industrial and living quarters of the town were all mixed together, and more actual Lego sets were still in use in comparison to later layouts. Check out the following picture, a close-up of a rather industrial part of town: behind train tracks, fields and "green plains" (a dark ping pong table:), there is my "Maier GmbH", containing a corn silo tower. Corn and other cereals were sucked from the farmersī trailers and stored in the silo, from where it could be filled into smaller containers, in/on truck trailers and train cars. The "Maier GmbH" was actually based on a small company in my hometown.
Further in the back, on the right top part of the picture, is my Car Repair Shop & Scrapyard. To me, it was a quasi obligation in any town layout because of all the fun it was playing with:). Naturally, it was well illuminated with 12V lights so playing at night was fun as well. Very characteristic of this one and all of my later versions of the Car Repair & Scrapyard Area was the ownerīs appartment, a penthouse on top of the workshop, which could be reached by outer stairs. Inside (Iīm sorry for not having any more pics!) was a cable control to lift up heavy engines or other stuff (check out the small booth on top of the middle part of the building), which in later versions became movable on rails. In any of my layouts, the Car Repair Shop & Scapyard was pretty much the heart of the industrial part of the Lego town.

Here is a view over the other side of the town. Other than two industrial places - my brotherīs Car Repair Shop (in the back) and a cargo train station (a Lego set), it was a "nicer" quarter, mainly based on the Big White Villa, my first big colorized building, but also on the old train station and the shopping area inmidst of the 9V tracks, the old Prisoners Tower Ruin in the fields (the black, abandoned fortress-like building) and the new train stop at the 12V tracks.
On the left side of the lower part of the photo, the transition part between 9V and 12V tracks, permitting the exchange of single train cars or entire trains (as I mention on my welcome page), is visible, too.

Again, a picture of the earliest version of my "Maier GmbH", which later received a "Delivery Van" (itīs among my other MOCs).
