The Fisher Building, a 28 story tall skyscraper in Detroit, Michigan
About this creation
This is a minfig scale replica of the Fisher Building of Detroit, Michigan. It measures about 6 feet high and 4.5 feet wide. Structurally it was not designed very well. It was built in 5 sections but one of the sections collapsed when I tried moving it. This setback has forced a complete rebuild to make it much stronger. I will update the MOC pages with better pictures of version 2 when it is done.

The reason why I selected this building is because it is Detroit's best example from the golden age of skyscrapers. The same period saw the construction of New York's Chrysler and Empire State buildings. Several other people have created good MOCs of those famous structures.

The original Fisher Building was built in 1928 in the New Center area of Detroit. It was commisioned by the seven Fisher brothers who made a fortune supplying auto bodies to General Motors. It was designed by prolific architect Albert Kahn who was also responsible for building auto baron Henry Ford's home, several University of Michigan buildings, and numerous car factories.

The building was constructed in my basement. When the radio mast is attached, it is just below the 7 foot ceiling.

Its a long way down. Its hard to see, but there is a Harry Potter minifig at the lower left. Perhaps he had another mishap with the flue powder and ended up in Detroit.

The "golden" tower of the Fisher Building (changed to mostly green during WWII to prevent it from becoming a beacon to enemy bombers).

The middle section of the tower collpased into these spectactular ruins after I tried to move the building. Back to the drawing board!

This shows "version 2.0 beta". It had a major bug! After reinforcing the building to make sure it did not fall apart, it became too heavy to move safely. More work is needed to subdivide the sections for easier transport to the next MichLUG show.

You've told me a lot about version 1, but didn't tell me it was on MOCpages. That must have been devastating when it crashed into pieces. I am glad you built version 2, and I am glad to be a member of MICHLUG, with members like you!

Love the detail on your moc and the sheer size of the building. I'm 6'8" tall so I should be able to just look down on the top. Great work. Too bad about the collaps. Love to see the new pictures.

Spencer R. turned me, and other MichLUG members, on to this awesome creation. I gave it 5/5 because I love the detail and the general overall effect. An interior would be a massive undertaking, though! Jim, if you live in Michigan, I think I speak for many MichLUG members when I say we'd love to see this in person! Thanks for sharing.
