Tower of Orthanc at Isengard from Lord of the Rings
About this creation
The tower of Orthanc at Isengard.
This is my first Lego creation in years. For some bizarre reason after seeing Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, I wanted to pull out my dusty Legos and build the tower. The available Legos were insufficient and badly worn so for the first time in years I purchased new ones. Most of the Legos come from basic bucket sets and one Darth Maul set that I purchased, built, disassembled, and used for the tower. The tower is 56 inches high (4.6 feet). It is loosely based on the design that Alan Lee developed for the films from a cover painting that he did for an reprint edition of The Two Towers, the middle book in Tolkein's Middle Earth trilogy. Alan Lee is my favorite Middle Earth artist. He really gave many of the film sets a solid, historical and architectural basis.
I also considered building Helm's Deep but there are more of those than even Orthanc. I started on a true minifig scale version of Orthanc but with a base almost two feet across and a projected height of over 10 feet, I suspended the project since when I remembered that it would take eight times as many Legos (which I did not have).
Permanent display location in my SF and Fantasy library which includes several editions of the LoTR books.
The tower is constructed on a standard green baseplate. Snape, er, I mean Wormtongue, is keeping an eye on things.
The Orcs have already cut down the nearby trees and replaced them with Classico paving stones.
How did I end up here? Last I remember I was in Hogwarts yelling at Snape! (I do not have a Gandalf minifig so I had to make do)
Another glorious day in middle Earth.
Please note that this was my first MOC since 1979 so go easy on me!

This is great! It's also one of my favorite Orthancs around... Now all we need is the rest of Isengard, maybe the Morannon and the Isenmouthe, and perhaps Minas Morgal. (Ithil, if you insist.) Amazing build! |

This is probably one of the most beautiful MoCs I've ever seen, all cathegories! So happy that you decided to come out of the LEGO closet (20 years is a long time!), it makes the world a better place. I especially like the four tips of the tower, very accurate! Thanks for sharing! |

Of all the movies and the books, The Twin Towers has always had a special place inside of me. It's good to somebody who hadn't built for decades to not go right for the Star Wars! There still is hope! Good day |

Nice, very detailed, although the blue and red bits seem a bit odd, as does the purple-robed wizard at the top. |
