The "COOL" machine
Exorcising some childhood demons-one vig at a time.
About this creation

A sculpture of my experience of school. It's not an "Another brick in the Wall" thing-I had no quarrel with the education system. I loved learning. No, it was the other kids, the bullies and the ever-present 'in' crowd, who conspired to bring the rest of us down to their mediocre level. The relentless "COOL" machine that turned innocent and unique kids into mindless, apathetic clones. Only the middle ground was acceptable; if you were dumb then they teased you and called you a retard. If you were smart they teased you and called you a square. Only the average was tolerated. And everyone had to be the same, like the same things, listen to the same music, wear the same clothes, even speak the same way. I vividly recall being forced to swear like all the other Grade 6 kids, something I wasn't comfortable with at the time (ironic becasuse I swear like a trooper now!) To avoid punishment I learned to be invisible and cowardly stopped trying too hard with my studies. Something I dearly regret.

It occurs to me many of you guys are still at school. I'd like to think you aren't as timid as I was but if you are being bullied please speak to your parents, teachers and fellow classmates about it. Together as a group you are stronger than a single bully. And remember to be yourself, as hard as it is sometimes. Don't become a bland sheep like the rest. Although I have a funny feeling I'm preaching to the converted...

This has been a Shannon Ocean public service announcement.

Bright, enthuastic kids go in...

Bland, moronic clones come out.

The infernal apparatus of COOL.

*Whack!!*

Sadly this is very true. I think it's part of the reason my folks decided to home-school me. Despite that, I'm still very aware of what "the crowd" is like. Brilliantly done!

Very symbolic and true. Many smart kids are ignored, but the lower intelligence is left alone. Very true. Imagine if the world was the same. It'd be a horrible, dull, grey planet, with no imagination, but just hundreds of human drones. Thank goodness we are all able to be different. Nice creation!

Hmm, it seems I haven't commented on this, EVER. Don't know why... Anyway, I couldn't agree with you more. Fortunately for me, the year group I'm in (in Britain, BTW) is mostly comprised of nice people who don't really do anything to make you feel awkward or out of place. I say mostly, there are still a few people who seem to think they're 'cool' and better than us, but hey, there will always be people like that, sadly. And there are plenty of others like me that I'm good friends with, or others who I'm on good terms with. Anyway, I guess I'd better stop before I give you my life story thus far.

One of my favorites MOC's of all time. I remember way back then when I was too smart (nerd), not athletic (wimp), artistic (weird, etc.etc. Somehow, despite everything, I just didn't care what the cool kids thought and I was able to jump out of line and avoid going through the machine.

To be painfully real *cue violin*; my true colors were buried for years through school and the military, but it wasn't until I became a born-again Christian that the real me came out again, and is now starting to blossom (maybe not so much in Lego but in a bunch of other areas in my life). Great MOC, it actually makes ya think.

Quoting jmmy avila this is one of the most poetic mocs ive ever seen in my life based on the fact that alot of what you said is true even if i was an outsider at school i honestly never went into that "cool" machine when i was in school. ever scince grade school i was getting kicked out from school to school because of my ability to badly hurt the ones bullying me. it wasnt up untill highschool that it stopped but i had become a different person because of my past. i han never grew up with anyone but my family and ive always had my own style to this day. i was one of the lucky ones but i ended up alone
That's the trouble with being yourself, it tends to mean you end up alone. But there are others like you, we're just a little more spread out than all the clones... Thanks for your comments mate.

Very nice MOC with a great message. I'm one of the few different people where I live, but I'm proud of it! Because of my interests and physical appearence, I am constanly picked on and I don't have friends or a social life. But I don't care because I know that I'm going to do great things in life, while they are too busy being "cool".

You must be one of those loser kids who was always the target of a vicious noogie or a monsterous wedgie. *Applause* I knew what this was going to be about before I clicked on the thumbnail. See most kids at that age don't have the maturity to look past cool. Its hard to go to school everyday and block it all out, thinking to yourself "there just kids at school, they make no difference to my future". Most kids at 13 aren't concerned about their future, only the present. And the present, at least for a few years, is seven hours five days a week around them. School was created for the purpose of educating kids so they become productive adults, I never felt like that was why I was going to school. But that's just one flawed aspect of a severely flawed system the human race uses to sustain itself. I just hope by the time we're extinct, the earth can somehow recover from the massive damage we are and will inevitably do to it. Veered off subject there for a sec... my bad. Superb idea for a moc, the subject is there and so is the building. This is nothing short of art.

My same feeling of school. I love mocs with a meaning. I was smart and was bullied for being so. So I acted like I wasn't smart and was called an idiot. Now I don't event care about bullies. I just be myself. Then again, not many people take on a 6ft 13 year old boy. Great moc, and love the point your trying to get across.

This is actually great! And the funny thing is - I had not seen this MOC before (or I don't remember seeing it) but I had the same idea for the Big Toy Hut zombie contest, I just gave it a somewhat different meaning: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/112855 Now if I knew you had already done it, I wouldn't even have done it - so maybe it's better that I did not know because I had fun building it! PS Wherever I post my MOC now I add a reference to your MOC so as to give you credit even though I didn't copy it...

Interesting, isn't it, how 'in' has changed over the centuries. It went from strong to intelligent to chivilrous to hard-working to loyal, and much more before it reached "cool". Now the 'in' thing merely takes away from society and personality. I cannot think of any way to stop "cool" from taking over other than personally standing up for yourself one person at a time. I'm frightened to think of what the 'in' thing will be in the future!

This is a brilliant and totally original piece of industrial art, even if it is a little large for the standard vignette format. I've never seen anything quite like it! I feel like I can identify with the unique minifigs; as one rejected by the COOL machine for not fitting in the mold, I know what that hammer feels like. I must know: Do the gears and pulleys on the side do anything (like actuate the hammer or turn the conveyor, or even just turn each other via a connection on the inside), or are they just connected on the front?

I am with you on this one, sir. I see these people all over the place at my school, but worse. They call themselves "unique," and they say that they are "individuals," but they all do the same thing, like the same tings, listen to the same music, et cetera. On top of that, they are all so close-minded that they frown anything that's "corporate" (at least in relation to music) without even giving it a chance. They've become such hypocrites, crying out against new school policies and then mindlessly going along with it later. It sickens me, but at least I'm not alone. Oh, and the vig's good too.

i fully agree, but i am "in" crowd while not being a clone. it annoys me how i can get accepted for being who i am but others cant. i dont do all of the things most 14 year olds do; i do my own, and get accepted. in fact most people at my school know im a bit nerdy. i get in honor role and whatever else. sometimes you dont have to be a clone to be accepted. it is the ones who try to be clones who are timid. (i just hope high school isnt as bad for freshman as most people say!) Ps: elementary school was where i got picked on, but middle school was better. respect to you and many others with the courage to stay who you are!

Yeah, I'm homeschooled too. I would definitely be considered on the nerdy side...I actually wear glasses. And read trigonometry and biology textbooks. For fun. I just thought of something funny- Put a Lego ol-skool ninja dressed in black on your desk and when someone approaches and begins sneering, calmly state: "This is Sensei Dojomaster. He is proficient in every martial art on earth, and if you so much as cross your eyes at me, he will kick your a-- from here to Tibet." Then stare them down until they find someone less psychopathic to pick on, and have a good laugh later.

Ah, the unfortunate reality all must face. Luckly I just graduated, I was one of the "middle" people. I'm shy and don't make friends easy, so people liked me and I was left alone for the most part. It had its ups and downs. Nice moc, very clever and good details.

I just finished high school grade 9 a day ago. I was labeled a nerd and geek, but I,m proud of it! The sheer fact that I still play with lego is a protection against the "COOL" machine! Not that there isn't anything uncool about lego...

Pessimistic, though I see what you mean. I also experienced some heavy bullying from nearly all my classmates when teachers looked the other way and those who didn't bully ignored me and what happened to me... Anyway, great MOC, and great advice for children out there!

I've already seen it but didn't know what to say at the time. Interesting point of view, I find it more clever than the scene in "Pink Floyd-The Wall" (in which only teatchers are shown as "bad people" who wants to destroy kids personnality) - as you said, school is sometime hard for "different" people ! The main pic is awesome, great work !!! PS : I don't ask for it usually, but I've made a cyborg race ship, maybe you'll can check it ? If you got the time only ! :)

creation: amazing. story/preaching behind it?: greatly touching. :] i am in the process of being halfway in the "cool" machine, but i have slowly started to fight my way out. (as being a legoer, that already makes me "un-cool" among much of my social peers. :D

I almost said this was cool, but it's not cool or uncool. It's a great concept well executed so cool doesn't matter.

Great build, very clean, and I love the meaning. I am was (and am) DEFINiTELY considered the nerd at school (and proud of it). However, I hang out with the nerds, but still have jock and rapper friends. Everybody at school knows my love of Lego, and they are fine with that. Great job.

Wow. I never would have thought that a Moc could have such meaning to it. I can only hope and pray that your message makes it out. Luckily, i go to a school where you are accepted, no matter what you're like. Excellent work.

ah, I was the one who was bullied for my love of legos... glad that's mostly stopped. One cool year everybody had bionicles and we used to duel them.... great moc.

Wow... 'when I grow up, I want to go to Bovine University'. Great build, love the message. For some reason when looking at this, I am reminded of a recent conversation where we decided what color crayon we would be if we were a crayon. Most people announced red or blue or orange, it came to me. ...I said I want to be the brown crayon. ...someone has to do it.

First! You know, I was one of those kids like you. You know what I did... Became a cop! Now if I see one of those bullies (who are mostly working at Burger King now)? No, I don't pull them over... I laugh in the knowledge that I turned out better than them cause I stayed true to myself. Take it from me kids, be who you are. Later ~ Chris.

Reminds me of 5th grade. Except I didn't hide, I fought. Unfortunatley (or fortunatly) It made me hated for the next 2 or so years years. I did make a comeback when I started acting like I was a god, so I ended up with a group going around thinking I was Jesus re-incarnated. PRobably one of the most interesting things that has happened to me for a while. Nice MOC.

I read your message and liked it, but thats not why Im reviewing. Id just think it would be nice to tell you (Im not sure if its just me or what, but) every time I click on one of your images I have to re click it and re click it several times to get it to open...often after it randomly jumps around your page...lol, Its not just your pages. Ive noticed this on most of the black pages on MOCpages...

I think it's safe to say you've struck a nerve here. But you think you had it rough, try growing up as a boy with a girl's name... oh, wait... Um... If turning the crank actually makes the hammer move, this really IS a cool machine.

I think you have come into your own man. I really like the tangent your new works are one - very creative and thoughtful. I was lucky, only 600 kids in my school and differences were tolerated. I was likely one of the poorest kids in the school yet I hung-out with one of the richest. The gear heads hung out with the preps and the heavy metal guys with the new age guys. Very friendly. Lee.

A great build indeed! Very cool machinery and I love the hammer. Although, the effects are kind of reversed for me because I love the color/shade gray (but in many variations). By the way, where does one get so many gray minifigs?

Yup - in school I turned grey learning to conform, avoiding ridicule and the ever-present threat of a beating. Fortunately, my color came back once I got to college, where the cool machine's conformist agenda couldn't compete with everyone's desire to find themselves. But humans love to label and catagorize, and society has a similar machine that turns us into good little soldiers as adults (go to work, enjoy sports, watch television, pay taxes, and on, and on, and on)...so school was practice for the "real world," and your MOC illustrates it perfectly!
