Technic Magic Sphere Ball
About this creation
All photographs by Abe Friedman at the meeting of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Users Group on September 11, 2004.

1968 pieces.

To answer some questions:

- I did not know about the Hoberman toy until I saw it it the USA. The toy I used as a reference is somewhat different, althought uses the same basic concept. I must admit that the original toy works better since it's individual components are single pieces. I had to build each component from a number of LEGO pieces. Technic axles would slip out from the Technic Angle Connectors relatively easily, so I can't fully extend my version. Perhaps I will build a final version and glue its pieces together.

- It didn't take long to get the black parts. I already had many axles and #3 connectors from previous BrickLink purchases. I had to buy a lot of #1 connectors, hinge plates, and Technic Bricks (1x1 with hole and 1x2 with two holes) to compete the BOM and I could get everything from 3-4 shops in less than 3 weeks.

Date: 08/31/2004

UPDATE: Finally I glued the model.

Your MOC deserves 5 smilies for being something different. I've seen the actual toy before and think you did a great job at replicating it. I can only imagine what a pain in the butt it was to glue everything together.

Wow! I had no idea it was even possible to build something like that. I imagine it doesn't stay together real well tho.

All photographs by Abe Friedman at the meeting of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area LEGO Users Group on September 11, 2004. We encourage long commutes! The true marvel of this construction can only be weakly appreciated in still photos, as it is the kinetic properties as the ball folds and unfolds that mesmerize.
