Hi Ryan,
For the lid I used what Bricklink calls hinge tiles ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4625) and hinge vehicle roofs ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4213). The "lid" for the secret compartment is not hinged or attached.
