Dave & Stacy's LEGO Lair as of July 8th, 2008. Currently Under Construction.
About this creation
As promised, here are the latest pictures of the ongoing renovation of our LEGO Lair. These pictures are current as of July 8th, 2008. Construction is slated for completion in late-August 2008. Since the previous pictures were taken, we have added a lot of storage space as well as changed our table design/layout. We currently have about 12 of the 30"x30" tables complete. Once construction is finished there will be about 30 of those tables in the basement. That's 27,000 in^s (or 187.5 ft^2) of display space for LEGO (and means we can have our whole layout set up at once)! WooT!
The table design is based on the PNLTC modular tables and the BAYLUG modular tables. Both designs are great, but Stacy and I opted to simplify construction a little by using 2x4's instead of 1x2's. Our tables are probably a little heavier, but we don't transport them much so that's not really a factor. If you go with this design, you will need a LOT of 5/16" bolts. :-) A 4'x8' sheet of plywood (we used 1/2") yields tops for three 30"x30" tables and the gussets for about nine legs. Two 2x4's and two 2x2's will yield the necessary materials for one 30"x30" table with four legs. You can opt to build a 30"x60" table instead (and use less legs), but we like the idea of having a lot of flexibility with our tables...thus the smaller size.
The shelving in the back (on the right) is 36" wide Rubbermaid shelving from Menards. Each shelf is capable of supporting 200 lbs. (way enough for boxes of LEGO). Each shelf houses various size plastic totes in 6 qt. (aka - shoebox) and 15 qt. sizes. These totes can be found at a variety of stores (Target, Menards, Wal-Mart, etc.) and usually range in price from $2-$5 depending on size and brand. To the left of the shelving you can see Dave's workbench with eight pull out drawer modules. These are available from Menards for about $10/ea.
To the left of Dave's workspace, you see another workbench that belongs to Stacy. Although currently occupied by Dave's Star Wars stuff during the construction/move, this is where she works her Harry Potter magic. On the right side of the bench you will notice that we custom built shelving to accept the Plano "Stowaway" style storage boxes. If anyone wants the plans to build those shelves, e-mail us. They were super-easy to build. The table in the far left of this picture will be removed as soon as construction is complete to make way for the "Star Wars Table".
Here is another shot of the two workbenches. The TV is nice to have on in the background. That way we don't miss the latest episode of "Deadliest Catch". ;-) Be sure to check back here in the next 1-2 months as we finish the renovation project and post more pictures and details. As always, shoot us a note if you have any questions!

Hi, Mr. Sterling. I had a question about Brickworld this year, and I know that you know some of the guys in charge. I found out that the full access registration has hit the limit, which I assume is due to exhibit constraints, and I was wondering if it would be okay to pay for the full access but not submit an exhibit, or if there was some other way to work it out. I thought it was worth a shot, and hey, the worst you can say is "no." Thanks, and keep on brickin'!
There are actually a number of reasons why the registration was capped including (but not limited to): display space, goody bags, available space for opening/closing ceremonies, etc. I don't think the organizers are going to budge on that number mainly due to space constraint issues that go beyond display space. Your best bet is to use the contact form on the Brickworld website and see what they say. Sorry.

Ah-ha!!!
Hopefully, a reflection of this is what our current "LEGO Corner" will one day expand into! Very smart layout, there's just one more thing that we would surely add: somewhere to sleep! Since I can't really see any good reason to leave such a cozy cave ;] |

David B.:
The trays in the back are the "Tool Shop" brand and were purchased from Menards. Similar ones can usually be found at any 'big box' hardware store in their storage solutions section near the hand tools. I think they run about $10-$12 per module. |

A lego-lair? SWEET! But what I'm really wondering about is those trays, in the back left. What company makes them, and is it possible you can give me the measurements on those trays? Cheers, David. Edit: Whoops. |

No, Stacy is the god! She got a man to build her an entire LEGO Lair!! I am so jealous! My husband barely lets me use the dining room table half the time. You guys are awesome. Can't wait for Stacy to have her own page so that we can be FFOLBFF's. |

You sir... are a god. Not only do you build great creations, not only did you build the ultimate "batcave" for lego geeks, but you have a wife that LOVES lego! You scored! Can I have your autograph? ~ Chris. |
