Racer X's car, The Shooting Star!
5 hours or so worth of thought and bricking, and this is the result.
About this creation
Here's the story...

Yesterday (July 14th, 2008) I had picked up my second Speed Racer set, #8159 Racer X & Taejo Togokhan. After I built both vehicles, I sat back and looked at them, then to the top right corner of the box where they show a more accurate representation of the Mach 5 and the Shooting Star. I figured I could do better, so I set out to do it immediately.

I knew I had the parts. In addition to the new set mentioned above, I have two sets of, #8143, Ferrari 1:17 F430 Challenge, and given it provides and alternate parts for a yellow shell, it's perfect for this project. I had to delve into my immense collection for a 'few' parts along the way .

I should also add that I incorporated Auto Jacks into the Shooting Star, borrowing the off-wheels stand concept from the F430 challenge model, modifying it further (this is what took me the most time) to incorporate a pullback motor from set #8490, Desert Hopper. In this configuration it is a front-wheel drive, with the Auto Jacks set with a 2-stud gap instead of the 4-stud gap used on the F430 model.

So far I think it's turning out pretty well. I hope to spend some more time tonight working on the nose piece.

I'll keep you updated on my progress as time allows.

This is my first real MOC attempt since I moved from BC, to Alberta a year and a half ago!
(Correction: I had built a Krayt Dragon skeleton for a Star Wars Lego exhibit at the Telus World of Science back in Mid 2007. Perhaps I'll find a pic and put it up here).

"Back in brick saddle again!"

UPDATES:
July 16th, 2008:

I knew from the beginning that the engine should technically have eight engine exhaust ports, but for this model six fit and looked better. Though to be honest, I didn't want to got digging too deeply as I was on a roll.

Also, please check back often as I do respond to questions publicly (and privately if appropriate).

See more soon!

"You have captured the shape amazingly well. One question though, is this meant to be minifig scale? It looks kinda big."

Thank you Thomas.
No it was never meant to be minifig scale, I just had the Racer X minifig and stuck him in there. He can grab the steering wheel but the angle's a bit off and he needed a booster seat of a flat 2x2 to get him to sit high enough.
Originally I had just ripped the shell off the F430 and was going to use the base, but I ended up starting from scratch after numerous modifications. So the F430 was the basis for the scaling (approximately 1:17).

"More pictures please!"

I will take more soon. And once I complete the model, I'll see about making instructions. I've never made instructions before, but LDraw and MLCAD offer some unique possibilities versus hand drawn, so we'll see.

UPDATE:
November 17, 2009

I have since completed the front end giving it the more polished look it deserves. Unfortunately I need to track down the pictures I took.
Life took a major detuour in the last year. Please stand by. More developments coming in future. Thanks for all the kind words.
