About this creation
I am a big fan of the factory set 10144, but the DK book “Star Wars – Complete Cross-Sections” book featuring a cut-away of this vehicle was the inspiration to create this model. Although this MOC is probably not to true minifig scale, it is much bigger than the factory set and the largest vehicle I have completed. It measures some 54cm (21.3”) in length, 34cm (13.4”) tall (excluding antennas), 27cm (10.6”) wide, and tips the scales at just over 7kg (15.4lbs). C-3PO and R2-D2 “we’re saved…” or maybe not.
Worn from many years of harsh sandstorms and attacks from Sand People and desert monsters, the Sandcrawler roams the deserts and wastelands of Tatooine. Each Sandcrawler is home, store, transport and workshop for an entire Jawa clan.

Access hatches on both the left and right sides of the vehicle. The lower extendable ramp allows boarding from ground level. The upper hatch can be used to access via an air-bridge found in some space ports.
The interior of this model is revealed by opening the hinged side panels and removing the roof panel.

An overhead crane is used to load disassembled metal parts from a salvaged ship or ore from Level 2 to the system conveyor on Level 3. Stage 2 of the ore processing / metal recycling operation. Optical sensor of the electronic systems controller scans and assesses material type and size. Stage 3 of the ore processing / metal recycling operation. Lasers are used by the electronic system controller to blast larger metal parts or pieces of ore to a smaller size.
Stage 4 of the ore processing / metal recycling operation. Crushers break the metal parts or ore into even smaller pieces as they enter the furnace to be superheated and smelter down. Stage 5 of the ore processing / metal recycling operation. The molten metal or processed ore cascades out of the furnace to be extruded into ingots which can be sold later.
The Sandcrawler comes across the wreckage of a crashed speeder in the desert. The Jawas quickly set about to salvage what they can from the wreck. The Sandcrawler is moved forward and the auxiliary hatch located in the main front ramp is opened to allow large sections of the wreck to be lifted aboard with the overhead crane.
I own the official set myself, and it's amazing, one of the best sets I own...
...but judging by design and awesomeness when compared to this, then the set is heavily outnumbered by the greatness of this beast - this is AMAZING. I can't believe how much time and effort (and money) you've put into this.
If only this was the real set..

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTT!!! I have seen the cross section book you refer to and every detail you have invested on!!! Totally A+++ work for effort and it looks much more iconic than TLC's sandcrawler! Good job!
I have the original set, and I also saw the cross section diagrams. Wow, this actually does justice to the design- the official set doesnt even come close. Seriously, bravo! I love the metal processing plant especially. (btw, the droids in the hold are top knotch!) Wow, just wow.
