A Christmas tree with all-LEGO ornaments
About this creation
For some reason, it never occurred to me before to decorate my home Christmas tree all in LEGO ornaments. I didn't go crazy, just a few designs, but the overall impact was quite effective. Non-LEGO parts included: Tree, tree stand, electric lights, candy canes, tinsel, thread (for the garland), and metal hooks. But every ornament was 100 pure. (And of course there was a LEGO train around the base of the tree!)
Merry Christmas!

The tree looks best in real life, of course. It's all sparkly and Christmasy. My son's aunt didn't even notice that the ornaments were LEGO until her husband mentioned it.

The baubles are simple balls. I tried building them solid, but they were a bit heavy. Making them mostly hollow was not too hard.

Two garland designs. The patterns were chosen based on piece availability. These were pretty easy to make. I tied the thread to a 2x2 round, then threaded the other end on a large needle and zip, zip, zip, they were done. I used black button thread which is sturdy, but is still thin enough to be virtually invisible anywhere it might show through.

I tried doing icicles in clear, but they disappeared in the visual noise of the tree. White turned out to be much more effective (plus, I had a lot more 1x1 rounds in white!).

Snowflake design inspired by Gary McIntyre. Nice work, Gary. I made the hub out of 1x3 plate instead of L-plate, because that's what I had. I think they came out great.

It wouldn't be a Christmas tree without a star. Design inspired by Gary McIntyre's Star of Bethlehem. Essentially two crosses connected by a 2x2 turntable with a few bricks locking it from turning. The surface is covered with 1x1 trans-yellow round plates, placed between the studs. This gives the star a bit of sparkle, especially with the light below it shining up at it. To attach it to the tree, I built a sheath along the back that fits (perfectly) over a protruding vertical stick.

A great use for the name tag tiles (available at LEGOLAND, CA). These came out nicer than I expected.

I love it, and I was hoping I could try that this year (but I might not be allowed =) ) |

Don't listen to the naysayers. The ornaments are great. (I wish I had the time to do this myself. Perhaps next year.) Just because someone has already done it doesn't detract from the sheer coolness factor. =) |
