A-Wing Carrier
The A-Wing Carrier is my biggest Lego spaceship.
About this creation

The A-Wing Carrier was my first super-sized Lego spaceship and the biggest model I’ve built so far. I built it in late fall, 1999. It was 224 studs long (about 6 feet), 96 studs wide, and 44 bricks tall and had over 12,000 pieces. Although it was designed to exist in the Star Wars universe, the ship seems to have more of an anime look to it. It carries 8 Rebel A-Wing Fighters and is armed with various lasers and blasters.

I had always wanted to try building a super-sized model but I didn’t really have the Lego resources to do it. But I had the idea of using large gray base plates to minimize the use of plates. The decision to build a carrier was the result of the pieces I had to work with. In addition to the large base plates and road plates, I also used castle walls and rock walls (BURPs) to minimize the use of regular bricks. The use of a secondary color (green and white for this model) was also the direct result of not having enough gray bricks.

It took me about 2 months to build the A-Wing Carrier. Although it is probably the most popular Lego creation I’ve made, I don’t consider it to be my best work. However, I had a lot of fun building it and I learned some valuable lessons to help me on future capital ship models.

This picture of me with the model gives the viewer a clue of how big the ship was…I’m about 5’ 10” tall.

The bridge interior was very plain. Obviously, I didn't really spend that much time on it.

The main cabin and crew bunks. I actually liked the way this section worked out, though I didn’t take enough pictures of it.

The Captain's quarters, located at the "neck" between the main deck and the bridge.

   My favorite interior shot.

The only shot I have of the entire interior exposed. Note the galley section (far left) before it was divided into 2 sections—galley and sickbay.

The ship’s galley. The doorway at the top of the picture leads to the elevator up to the bridge. The doorway on the far right leads to the sickbay.

The flight deck, with droids and mechanics hard at work while pilots swap combat stories. The ladder in the upper right leads up to the main cabin.

Top view of the sickbay. The red headed figure is the ship’s doctor. The 3 blue 2 X 6 plates are beds. On the left is a sink, medical equipment and a medical droid. On the far right is a healing tank (from “The Empire Strikes Back”).

As I was taking apart the model for scrap, stopped to take this picture of my cat in the framework.

This picture shows the blank underside, the result of using large baseplates.

A rear view showing where the fighters come in to land.

I thought this angle offered an interesting depth-perspective view of the ship.

Now years later i found your magnificant carrier on mocpages - stunning how brilliant you managed to built such a big ship! Most attracks me the welldesigned deck-structure. And the surface is most welldone. good job here!

Wow, nice work! That said, when I came across the images online I was exited to see that someone had built the Cygnus from Disney's Black Hole. I'm not sure about a Rebel Carrier but it's well on its way to being and excellent Cygnus. Either way its way cool!! Cheers! Paul

Wow awesome job. When I came across this website and saw your amazing creations, I got so motivated that I made an account here and intend on finishing the ship I started a few years ago. It's around the same size as some of yours, about 68 inches long by 34 inches wide, 12 inches tall. I started running out of pieces so my color scheme got messed up, and I also need some more plates to cover up my shuttle bay and stuff. But thanks, I've always had a love for building things with Legos and you reminded me of how much I loved doing it!

Eeeeehhhh... I think this is one of my favourite MOCs ever, and don't think I fell for the size, it's how beautiful the details are, I'm a fan of interior and the front is so broad and powerful looking...

Epic ship incoming! I like the way you use plates to make your airstrips! But on the contrary, the bottom of the ship(the back of the plates is used) is a little bit less "sexy". I think i understand you when you tell it's not your best ship... I say it again, GREAT SHIP, anyway!!!

I would have the ships go out the back and in the front. If the ships go in from the rear there's the problem of afterburners (didn't look to see where those are on your ship) and having to keep up with the ship. If you're ship is out of fuel and you need to crash it into the landing runway, you will not be able to keep up with the ship. I just realized this myself, looking at a ship I was working on and realizing it had the same design flaw of having the runway in the back.

To Not Applicable, well, what did you expect from one of the guys who was one of the premeir LUGNET builders from back in the day (and Mark Kelso being another one in case anyone else wants to know)? To the guy who mentioned upchucking their food so that they could eat it again, that comment was just plain wrong on many levels and especially in comparison with this particular LEGO MOC. As for you, Mr. Jassim, I will offer this bit of advice for you. I would like it if you would make some sort of giant door that can be flipped back into the interior of the ship and that you could use two knobs or some kind (one on each side of the space craft) to get the job done. Also, if you want to make a SHIP, try taking a gander at Craigslist for your LEGO purchasing needs, especially if you need bulk sets or LEGO by the pound.

If the spaceship is over 3 feet ( at least 114 studs) in any dimension, or bigger I just might add you. Can anyone recommend builders that have huge spaceships too? E-mail me at zlowing@hotmail.com, or if your on Myspace, myspace.com/zvr Have fun now, Zac

If the rating could go higher I would give you an infinity. It is probably the best MOC I've seen so far. Better than anything I've seen. You could become really famous if you made more of these. Not the Carrier, but the effort you put into making your creations.

It is true. Cats and LEGO together do very odd things. When I had just bought the Tahu Nuva set in 2003, I had left the peices on the Dining room table then gone to watch TV. After a little while my cat came in holding Tahu's mask in his mouth. he gave it to me. I was puzzled for a bit as he left, then he came back with one of Tahu's feet and gave it to me, then the Torso. He must've thought they were nice peices of meat for me or something, because he only took the red bits, not the orange or silver ones. Meh.

That's cool! I like how you made room for all the compartments, and the colors on the outside look good together. Did you buy a dozen A-wings to fill it? I gave it four because you left the bottom so bare, and I think the ship should have more guns and stuff. You know, that sort of thing. It also looks a bit like a carrier from a minor video game called EV Nova. It looks real good though.
