The Skunk Works Zombie Outbreak Buildings
You don't NEED zombies to make Town interesting... but it sure helps.
About this creation
When Andrew Becraft of The Brothers Brick announced the Lego Zombie Apocafest for BrickCon08 with a call for submissions, I thought, "You know... why not?" The funny thing is, I'm not much of a zombie apocalypse guy -- I think we humans are doing a fine job of bringing the apocalypse upon ourselves without any need for zombies -- nor much of a Town builder. But it sounded like it would be a fun collaborative display, and I wanted to be a part of it. I didn't even care about the swag promised to anyone who brought a building or a vehicle -- as a hardcore purist, a little pack of Brickarms stuff didn't much excite me. It was just a nice change of pace build.

I figured that during a zombie outbreak, people would need guns. Lots of guns. And that if I ever found myself trapped by zombies, there were worse places to be than in a gun shop.

If you are unfortunate enough to live in some backwards country that denies its citizens the right to own firearms, then this is what the front of a gun store looks like. The windows and door are heavily barred, and there are huge concrete pylons to block potential thieves from smashing open the storefront by ramming it with a vehicle.

I pictured the gunshop as being the most secure building in town -- employees could guard customers on their way in and out, and the owner (which I guess would be me in this case) has probably been anticipating the breakdown of society for some time, with supplies all ready to lug up to the roof in the event of an emergency. A cooler full of beer and a few crates of ammo equals peace of mind. Just sit back and roast some marshmallows.

I wanted some shelves in the middle of the floor on the inside, but it was already pretty cramped once a few customers came in. The interior was basically made for my own enjoyment, since it wasn't visible when on display -- and my favorite element is barely visible anyway. Beneath the counter is a glass display case with a few guns inside, but there's no way to get a good picture of it without demolishing the entire front of the building. Oh well.

Having made my gunshop and being quite pleased with it, I thought I'd try a townhouse. After all, what are the odds you'll just happen to be at the gun store when the zombies hit? What if the zombies appear overnight, while you're asleep?

I wasn't near as pleased with my townhouse. Architecturally it's really bland and simplistic -- I was out of my element. It needed dressing up (covering up) with a little zombie action, so there's one eating a guy's brains on the bottom step, and a few climbing the walls while a resident fights them off.

Then the roof was pretty boring. I wanted a few folks stranded up there, folks who weren't nearly as prepared as the gun shop guys, folks who needed help. There wasn't enough room to write the word "HELP" in white tiles, but I found that fortunately, there was just enough room for "SOS." Originally both minifigs were standing on that front part in distressed poses, but it still looked fairly pedestrian, and bothered me whenever I looked at it. Finally I peeled up a few of the white tiles from the last S and made it so the woman was in the act of painting it. It seemed to add more of a sense of urgency to the scene.

I didn't really intend for the two buildings to be next to each other in the final display, I thought they'd naturally be split up. It didn't make any sense to me to have one building in the process of being attacked, while next door at the gunshop it's all secure and they're doing nothing to help. But I just left my buildings and my vehicle with the guys in charge, and let them arrange everything.

You can see here in this scene from Ocean's Adventure, behind the Shannons there's a zombie feasting on brains, while everyone in line is oblivious, and the armed guards are ignoring it. Oh well.

How they appeared integrated into the display. (Photo from the Zombie Apocafest set on Andrew Becraft's flickr -- not only is he a much better photographer than me, but he took it upon himself to photograph EVERYTHING. Check it out.)

Zeitgeist actually started out in front of my two buildings, but got moved elsewhere in the display. There was an overabundance of zombified vehicles on the roads, so finding space for them all couldn't have been easy. (Showing up with a vehicle was "the easy way to get swag," Andrew noted with a wry grin.) This shot is also stolen from him.

So big thanks to Mr. Becraft for coming up with and organizing the whole thing, and apparently he hasn't learned from the frazzling experience of coordinating it -- he's already planning to do it again for BrickCon09.

This, and the rest of the display, was my son's favourite display. He spent hours over there talking to people about this, and the other fine creations. Thanks for sharing, and thanks for introducing my son to a new genre. Lee.

I'm looking forward to seeing this again . . . I have to say that I am very impressed by the many outstanding builds created for the zombie apoc fest. Still, "Sly's" and the townhouse remain some of my favorites; the emergency beer casket did it for me. Thanks for sharing. ~Nick

I really like the shot of the Zombie on the townhouse getting blown to bits. I really need to pick up one of those bush pieces that's reddish and looks like it could be fire. You know, firebush... I'll go to my time out corner now... ~Chris.

Love that blast to the chest. Lots of other good detail. The buildings look fine, especially in context. Flashy, or whacky buildings would detract from the zombie action. Sometimes I want to make the poor part of town in a scene. Just haven't done that yet. I like the lady painting on the roof. Looks like you had a great zombie layout. see ya. garth

I actually like the "bland" look of the townhouse, it contrasts well with the action taking place on the walls. This is one show I truly regret having missed.
