The American Planning Association (APA) and Boys and Girls Clubs of America model cities build at LEGOLAND, California.
About this creation
The American Planning Association (www.Planning.org), Inland Empire Section (www.IES-APA.org), in conjunction with LEGOLAND, California, sponsored a model cities build for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America (www.BGCA.org). The event was held at LEGOLAND, California on October 21, 2008. The purpose of the event was to enable kids to envision how cities are built and operated. LEGO is a perfect medium for construction of cities and buildings. The APA discussed "Good Planning" techniques and gave the kids one hour to construct a model city.
Approximately 40 kids, from four different Boys and Girls Clubs facilites around Southern california particpated in the event. Each facility broke into groups, which were led by APA members. The groups discussed city development, services and infrastructure and attempted to replicate a city with LEGO. Below are pictures from the event.
The Garden Grove group.
The Los Angeles group.
The Temecula group.
The Redlands group who won the model city build. And by coincidence, I was their group leader.
A big thanks to LEGOLAND California and the California APA Sections for sponsoring the event. We hope to turn the model cities build into an annual event and look forward to nexts year's build.
