On April 13, 1970, an oxygen tank exploded on the Apollo 13 service module, which was on its way to the moon. The explosion blew the cover off the craft, stirred its innards a bit, bled away all the reserve oxygen and most of the power, and nearly kept the astronauts from returning to Earth alive.
On April 13, 2004, I took apart the undamaged Apollo service module from LEGO set 7468-1 (Saturn V Moon Mission), and rebuilt it in the exploded state, based on NASA photos such as the one printed in that set's instruction booklet.
On April 13, 2005, I finally got these photos online.
This model is dedicated, of course, to the men who survived the experience.
Here's another view of my model, showing the details better.
