This is a model of the newer version of the Calgary LRT or C Train. The actual train is the SD 160, manufactured by Siemens.

About this creation

Calgary Transit currently runs 2 different types of C Trains. This is the newer version and is a Siemens SD 160. The older version is a Siemens U2 which I also MOC'd here.

The C Trains typically run in 3 car configurations. I built 2 of these trains simultaneously (which is probably why it took me 6 months to finish this MOC). I have included photos of both the model and the actual C Train below.

The decals took me a long time to make (like 30+ hours). In the end though I think it made the model look quite realistic particularly along the sides.

The front of the train was the part that I spent the most time experimenting with. The key features I wanted to accommodate were the wedge type nose, real windows and also fit the 4 wide light block. Eventually I settled on using train doors as panels that I angled in towards the front of the train. Although this was not an ideal solution I think it turned out to be the best one to accommodate the features I wanted. Once the decals were applied I could almost forget that the sides were actually door elements. :)

I used the same type of sliding joint and elastic mechanism for the middle joint that I used on my U2 model. Once again I must credit David VinZant and his TGV model for giving me the original idea. I was able to use some of the internal poles to hold the elastic in place.

The roof can be removed in 6 chunks for ease of access. I was quite happy with how the pantograph assembly turned out. I was able to include the red electical isolators, some pieces that looked like springs and even managed to create a V shaped arrangement of the structure similar to the actual one.

The inside provides lots of seats for minifigs rushing to work! I only placed chairs on 1 side so that I could keep an aisle in this 6 wide arrangement.

The front cab houses a custom made LED light. I want to thank Roy Nelson of the Southern Alberta Lego Users Group (SALUG) for his hard work in making this for me. I could not fit a standard lego light brick in the cab so I went with the LED and I am quite happly with it because it is much brighter. Also, I went with a 9V battery box to run the light (instead of the motor). This had several advantages including the light not dimming or going off when the motor was going slowly or stopped.

I wasn't able to accommodate a standard train base (though I tried) and ended up using a flat bottomed train with tiles on top of the wheelsets. This worked out quite well and the wheelsets swivel freely. I made the top of the wheelsets gray so that it blended with the stickers on the side.

Oh this is sweet. I live in calgary and im not sure i like the new color scheme though, i liked the old 1 better!!! I would love if you coud give me instructions, as i want to decal it with the old color scheme!!! The City of Calgary has barely any new trains in the old scheme, but the ones htat have it look awesome. Thanks

Thanks Michael for your comments and interest in my C Trains. I have had a few requests for replicas of the train. I'd like to tell you I could make you one but truthfully I wouldn't find the (month or so of) spare time to get it done. I should also warn you that it costs about $700 CDN for the 2000 or so Lego parts in a 3 car configuration like mine. If you are still keen to have one though I would be happy to share my knowledge of how I built mine so you could make your own. I will have my C Trains on display at the SuperTrain show in Calgary on April 18th and 19th. If you can make it, make sure you say hi and I can give you a closer look at my trains design and answer any questions on how I built it.
