Why?
Horizon OTV-01 . A "What if" scramjet/rocket orbiter to carry passengers. Built for the Sheboygan Space Society's 'Space Tourism' display at Rockets for Schools 2009. . For a cool 20-30 million dollars, you can spend a week on the International Space Station, courtesy of a ride on a Soyuz. For something closer in the range of $200,000, Richard Branson and Burt Rutan want to offer tourists a few minutes of weightlessness and a spectacular view on the suborbital "Spaceship Two" When - and how - could orbital flights become something within the reach of more than a few wealthy individiuals? At the Sheboygan Space Society Display for Rockets for Schools 2009, I created a 'what if' answer to that question - the Horizon OTV (Orbital Transport Vehicle). Powered by a combination of scramjet and rocket engines, crewed by two, and carrying six passengers, it can transfer passengers to a 'Bigelow Industries' style orbiting hotel, as well as transferring supplies.
