Digging In: Stalingrad, 1942 . "Yenobek, nynemet!" ~ "Man that machine gun!", "Bopc ha Gonee mewkamn cneckom!" ~ "Pile on more sand bags!", "Ectb nN kakNe-nNGo cnobo N3 Aleksyev ha hwen noct ewe?" ~ "Is there any word from Aleksyev at out post yet?". Shouts ring out up and down the street. People hurry about. There is a sense of anxiety in the air. The place is the outskirts of Stalingrad, the date is August 31st 1942. Just eight days after the massive German bombing raid and the citizens of the city prepare for the worst. . A small Russian tavern, one of the few buildings not destroyed by the heavy bombing. A lady sniper (deployed quite often by the Russians) conceals herself in the ruble of the upper floor. A machine gunner brings an extra amo drum, from the storage room upstairs, for his Degtyarev DP 1928 LMG. A Soviet soldier turns over a table outside to use as cover. Even children young enough to still be in school are called to serve. And in a dog-eat-dog world, those who can't eat... ...don't. Their bodies are covered up by the never ending assault of snow, and they lie forgotten, just another soldier. Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest battles in history. Cassualties, captives and KIAs (Killed In Actions) on both sides numbered two million by the time the last Germans had been repelled, encircled and slaughtered. The MOC from behind (in this shot you can see the storage "room" on the upper floor)... And above. The back with out figs. Showing the rubble on the inside... And outside left by the bomb. The front with out figs. And the figs.
