Playback . Two characters learn that the best way to groove to the freshest beats is to mix it up. (2008) . "Playback" is a film I made in August-September 2008 as an entry for the Nicktoons/LEGO "Built By Me!" animation contest. After completing "Little Guys!", I decided that my next foray into animation with brick-built characters would be on a smaller scale, as the large characters in "Little Guys!" would often collapse under their own weight. "Playback" was the opportunity to experiment in that regard, and I knew that whatever film idea I came up with, it would have to be extremely simple: minimal props, minimal sets, and only one or two characters, so I could concentrate on their construction. The characters came together pretty quickly, and as I detail in this behind the scenes video, had only minimal rig changes after their initial construction. As it was made under a super tight deadline (~1 month of nights and weekends), I didn't get to fully explore these character rigs to the extent that I would have liked. Despite this, I'm very proud of how it turned out. I plan to continue experimenting with characters like these, hopefully finding more opportunities to fully explore their potential -- lip synch is definitely the next step.
