Semi fire on the I-13 . .
Today a semi truck burned out on a parking on the I-13.
The driver stopped at the parking to rest.
He started to cook an a mobile gasfire, employees of the nearby restaurant/hotel heard a big bang, and went outside to look what caused the enourmous blast.
They found the cab of the truck on fire, fully engulfed, with no sign of the driver.
One of the guests of the hotel quickly dialled 911.
Battalion 3, Engine 32, Squad 31 and Rescue 6 were dispatched.
Engine 32 and Rescue 6 came on scene first and started primary attack.
Squad 31 and Battalion Chief 3 arrived just seconds after E-32 started primary attack.
Firecrews then faced a new problem, the hydrant system near the restaurant wasnt working, so Battalion Chief 3 alerted Tanker 1 and Tanker 3.
The crew of Rescue 6 did several attempts to enter the truck to grab the driver, after they made sure the trailer was secured and there were no hazardous materials on board.
When on scene, Tanker 3 deployed one of its portable tanks, and dumped water in it, while Tanker 1 lined up to do the same when Tanker 3 went on to refill.
The Captain of Rescue 6 then in a final attempt went into the cab of the burning truck, and grabbed the driver.
He and another firefighter under his command recieved minor burns in the rescue attempt, but were treated on scene, and could continue their duties.
The driver was severly burned and pronounced dead by on scene paramedics.
The fire was quickly knocked down.
After overhaul, the fire marshall did a investigation, and found out that the valve on the gas cilinder was faulty, and probably caused the explosion.
The wreckage was then towed away, and the trailer was picked up by another truck.
No further injuries were reported.
