Why?
RGM-79G Ground Type Gundam . The RGM-79G Ground Type Gundam is a mass-produced front line combat mobile suit. . The North American Republic's ongoing wars in the African and Asian theaters has placed a significant strain on the military's ability to produce and maintain mobile weapons platforms in a cost effective way. Seeking to remedy this situation, the NAR contracted General Dynamics to create a 'ground-type mobile suit' for earthbound combat situation. The result was far more successful than anyone anticipated. The RGM-79G was a low-cost, high-performance mobile suit that lent itself well to field performance and maintenance. With the ability to field a variety of different weapons systems, the RGM-79G all but removed the need for task-specific mobile suits. However, despite the platform's flexibility, most of the RGM-79G's are fielded with a 20mm 'Zephyr' assault rifle and a beam saber for melee combat. Additionally, the vast majority of RGM-79G's utilize the Sonya Electronics Standard Battlefield Imaging Suite (SBIS). However, in some roles they are refitted for a Greeneye Tactical Imaging Suite. RGM-79G variants are currently deployed in all active combat theaters, and most likely will be for the foreseeable future.
