The Knight of Ra . Built for FBTB's Mech Madness 2012 tournament. Built Sep. 2012. . First, here's a link to the contest
Okay, where to start? Well, I just spent upwards of 3 hours working on this entry. I typed EVERYTHING (you'll see what I mean by the end of this) and right when I clicked "preview your entry," my computer froze, and all the info was lost. So bear with me, I probably won't type as much this time around! :[ The day the contest was announced I was like "b1g mek + roz all gool + kewl gunz = awsum!!!!" Okay, maybe not in the clone kiddie voice, but I did know that I wanted to do something for Ra's al Ghul.
Edit: The mech is 31.5 in. tall, 14 in. wide, and weighs over 10 pounds.
Let's start with everyone's favorite: The backstory.
If you were wondering why I typed up a sneeze when I mentioned Ra's al Ghul, then you'll probably want to read this:
Ra's al Ghul is an antagonist from the DC universe (primarily Batman). Although he looks about 45-50, he is actually approx. 400 years old because he uses something called a "lazarus pit" that restores health to those near death and kills the healthy. He is an eco-terrorist because he believes that the only way to save the world is to destroy it (using the lazarus pits).
Now switching channels from Biography to Comedy Central...
After Ra's' most recent use of the lazarus pit, instead of just maniacally laughing a lot (the pit causes temporary madness), he actually talked some...
Ra's: ha ha ha ha hip ha ha- why so -heh ha- serious? BA HA HA HIP HA HA HUH HA- I'm glad Liam Neeson shaved his- hee heee hoooo- mullet before he became- hip ha- me!!!
Talia: Father, are you okay?
Ra's: Okay? Ha ha ha hip eh huh ha - I'm hip dee dookay!!! Oh, and- harhar ha hee hee ha- fix me a-WOOOOOOO HA HA- sandwich!!!
Ra's: HAHAHAHA ha ha- I love mechs- ha ha her hee ha- I LOVE MECHS!! BUILD ME A MECH UBU!!! heee ha hee ha hoooOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So Ubu, Ra's' faithful servant, started working on a mech for his master.
After weeks and weeks of building on average 4 hours a day (hint hint), ubu finally placed the last piece.
Just as Ubu was about to sit down and rest, Ra's entered the workshop!
Ra's: Ubu, where have you be- What the rats is this?!
Ubu: But master, recently you told me to build you a mech.
Ra's: What? Must've been an alien clone or something.
Ubu: I have failed. Alien infidels...
Ra's: What are you talking about? I love it and I'll take it!!
Ra's: Sure! Free of charge!
And that folks, is the epic tale of the orgins of the legendary mech, Knight of Ra!
Recognize the feet? Heh heh. And you thought you'd get away without a Halo reference...
I really like this shot actually.
There are two small drones on each side of the mech near the shoulders (this is the left side one). The drones are meant to deploy from the mech and fly around providing live camera feed to the cockpit so the pilot can see the battle from different angles.
The cockpit lifts up...
...the pilot seat folds out...
...unveiling the outer lazarus pit tank...
...which opens up revealing the inner lazarus pit tank...
...which lights up with a light brick!
Look up "Secret Crisis" on FBTB and you'll see why the computer screen fits the bill.
If Ra's receives a mortal wound in combat, the cockpit can actually temporarily flood with lazarus chemicals to restore Ra's to full health. And yes, I know you know I know that this reminds me of everyone's childhood role-playing battles (Oh yeah? Well I have tentrainium armor that gigazools can't penetrate!) (:D
Rock, paper, scissors, anyone? :)
Here's the tactical rocket that launches from the back of the mech. Why is it tactical? Example:
Ra's is fighting baddies (or would it be goodies?). He loses the upper hand (I have no idea how you could with a giant mech) and needs to bargain with his adversary. He says that he will launch the rocket which goes into space, releases the 4 warheads which fall and hit the 4 lazarus pits, which overflow and destroy the surface of the earth. The adversary pleads with Ra's not to do that. Ra's regains the upper hand. IT'S FOOL PROOF!! :P
Go solar power!! yeah!
The lazarus pit gun focuses a high speed stream of lazarus chemicals from the vat in the mech's chest... ...and it looks cool.
Thanks for looking at this super long entry! I'd definitely appreciate your vote in the contest, but be sure to read the rules and look at the other entries too! The link's at the top of the page.
