Vanderbilt Tender . A large, 10-wide, Vanderbilt tender. . So, after a lot of frustrating work of trying out different designs, here is my Vanderbilt tender, built in 10-wide! I originally wanted this style of tender for Big Blair , but at the time I could not come up with a reasonable solution and design that would work. A design dawned on me the other day, and so I experimented with it, and tada! Here it is.
The new tender is the same length as Big Blair's original box-style tender. I removed the back section and replaced it with the water cylinder. The front section, which holds the oil since Big Blair is an oil-burner, is practically the same. It still keeps the six Power Functions Train Motors as the original tender.
The back section changed drastically, as you can see here. It retains the ability to use the Power Functions Lights in the rear lights. The dual ladders had to get condensed down to a single ladder set.
The IR Receiver is still mounted in the rear section of the tender. One drastic change from the original tender to this new one is the removal of the hand rails on top. I am okay with that since it now has a much smoother overall appearance.
Big Blair is hooked up to her new tender. I think that the new look is a great improvement, and gives greatly enhances the effect of being a "Mixed Traffic" locomotive.
Another view of Blair with her new tender.
And... another view.
So, a while ago jd davis requested that I find a way to motorize his Mammoth Boy. I knew right away that a special type of tender was going to be needed in order to power that monster. A simple box-style tender would not do, since that would be too easy. I knew what I wanted to do, but the problem was building a Vanderbilt tender in that size. So I decided to build a "smaller sized" Vanderbilt for Big Blair and test it out, since Big Blair and Mammoth Boy are practically the same height. As you can see, it works. Although it is built with LDD, it was designed to be sturdy enough to work in real bricks, which is the goal of all of my creations. The LDD file not only includes the tender, but Big Blair herself, and the new(ish) snow plow. Enjoy!
