Shanghai World Financial Center, Shanghai . Model completed in 2013 . This model is approximately 1/650th scale, similar to my other skyscrapers. 12 Photos available on Brickshelf.com When completed in 2008, the Shanghai World Financial Center was China’s tallest building at 1614ft. The tower consists of 101 floors and is a mixed use tower with offices and a hotel. It will be exceeded in height by the Shanghai Tower that is being built across the street. The tower sprouts from a square form and tapers toward a knife like edge angled at 45 degrees to the base. When viewed from the side, the building gently tapers to a point. The upper portion of the tower features a trapezoidal aperture designed to relieve wind pressure and reduce the overturning moment. The original design specified a circular shaped opening, but was changed due to public perception that it too closely resembled the Japanese rising sun (the building’s developer was Japan’s Mori Building Company) The base is clad in stone, that is simulated here using the dark gray profile bricks. This is a symbolic connection with the earth, while the glass clad tower represents sky. My favorite model detail is this angular sunken plaza entrance.
