Stahl House . 22nd in the post-war series of Case Study Houses, built overlooking Los Angeles in 1959. . Buck Stahl knew what he wanted. After several architects had told him it was impossible he met Pierre Koenig, and together they created one of greats of post war Modernism. Taking full advantage of it's position perched on a hill overlooking L.A. this is a fairly simple, inexpensive small family house built from standard components. Stahl's widow lives there still. From the road, it does it's best to look like a cowshed... Notice the lack of railings of any kind - this house is perched fairly high up. The Stahls brought up their children here and they survived the experience. The pool will lift out to reveal the dark goings-on beneath the surface simplicity. All to attach those glazing bars, only one of which had to be simply wedged in place. Interior in all it's interiorness... An extremely sophisticated* tree... *Not really...
