Rivus Altus . The founding of Rivus Altus in the year 810 . After having crushed the forces of the Lombards in northern Italy, Charles the Great, the first holy roman emperor and King of the Franks integrated northern Italy to his empire. Many Venetians fled from the mainland to the islands in the Venetian Lagoon and founded in the year 810 the city of Rialto or Rivus Altus. The Franks attacked the settlement of Rialto but did not succeed in defeating the Venetians in the swamps of the lagoon. Life was hard at the beginning. The people had to fight the swamps. They dried the land build up piles for their homes to stand firm in the muddy soil of the islands. Year by year they won a piece of land for their use. One day, not too far away, Rialto would become Venice and Venice would become a super power in the medieval world of old Europe for centuries. The Serenissima was born. This moc shows how the people of Rialto are getting land from the swamps. Even in the starting period the Venetians were traders. Usually their homes consisted of a storage part in the ground floor and living rooms in the first and potentially second floor. More floors were usually not possible due to the muddy soil. This moc was built for Colossal Castle Contest V.
