"Anomaly" a sci-fi sculpture . What IS it? . Backstory:
For thousands of years the planet-droid orbited the warm yellow star
in silence. Not much happened externally, solar panels tracked the sun
and electricity relays hummed as they had for ages. Internally, the
planet-machine was busy, endlessly running computations concerning
the meaning of it's life and the creation of the universe; the BIG
questions. After millenia of running models and iterations it had
discovered nothing, only dead ends. The questions still burned and
so the calculations kept running. How old was it? When was it "born"?
Fiercely it analysed and re-analysed it's vast continent sized
memory banks. It looked far into the past but found only corrupted files,
lost in the haze of time and electrical atrophy. Were there other
planet-droids just like it? It scanned the cosmos with every conceivable detector,
searching, yearning for a sign, a signal. Seasons came and went. Nothing.
Then, one day, it found something. An anomaly. On it's very skin.
Something strange, something so OTHER. At first scared, not knowing
how to react, the planet-machine sat, frozen. Then, slowly, it came to life,
extending, at first one by one, then gradually millions of
scanners and detectors. Photodetectors, bolometers,
spectrometers, radioiosotopical collectors and even more exotic
instruments were brought to bear on the tiny green and pink anomaly.
The brain of the immense machine burned with curiosity?
WHAT WAS IT? HOW DID IT GET HERE? IS IT DANGEROUS?
Now the conciousness of the planet-bot split into two camps. One wanted to
study the anomaly, see how it worked, what it was made of, wondering if more
might come. The other half wanted to kill it, fearing it to be some
strange virus. And so the machine-mind fought with itself, an
incomprehensible tirade of code, like a demented metallic scream.
The flower quietly grew....
Building notes:
Firstly I want to acknowledge being influenced by both Nanny Z and Shannon Young,
also I was listening to Massive Attack's 'Mezzanine' album while building, which
probably helped. (AWESOME album by the way). This started off as more of a surreal sculpture. Then, the more I built the more a sci-fi backstory grew. It eventually won (sorry Art, better luck next time). I oscillated between terror and sheer joy building this: terror that I'd run out of dark blay 3/4 through building the "ground/skin" and sheer joy adding
all the greebling. Whew!
If you're wondering about the story, the planet in question is Earth and the planet-machine has
evolved millions of years in the future, long after man and animals became extinct.
By sheer miracle/accident, a plant seed has evolved/survived. Something along those lines; I'm not much of a writer. This is a bit of a fluke for me. Hope you guys liked it. Cheers!
Thessalonians 2:16 And Lo, it came to pass that Shannon Ocean's Anomaly was made MOC of the day. He saw that it was good that it was so, and was much surprised and grateful to the MOCpages team and yet also to many whom left their comments. He praised them muchly. Then the Lord said "It is done. In this act is thy beginning of thy end, and the days of Man shall pass." ;)
