Why?
Republic 54-X “Shadow” Speeder Bike . The 54-X Speeder Bike was an experimental model built to test and demonstrate advances in military speeder bike design. Had the project been successful the new 54-X bikes or “Shadows” as they were known to the troops who tested them, would have become the standard Republic military speeder. While the design did offer advantages in maneuverability, max flight ceiling and storage space and firepower, it was simply too expensive for mass production. Some of the prototype units found their way into the hands of the Jedi Order and were used to great effect until the dismantling of that organization. . For defensive armament the 54-X has two fire linked repeating blasters under the nose. It can also carry blaster rifles or other small arms. The 54-X is relatively large and menacing for a speeder. The pilot however is completely exposed to incoming fire. Pilots of speeder bikes must always rely on speed for protection. The rear compartment houses the repulsorlift generator which is hidden in a closed compartment. The “wings” of the 54-X contain small maneuvering thrusters that give the craft unprecedented maneuverability.
